Monaco Palace Tour: Explore the Regal Heart of the Principality

As someone who has spent nearly every summer in the Côte d’Azur, always spending time in Monaco with friends and family for the past ten years, I consider myself quite familiar with the principality.

But despite over a dozen visits to Monaco, the Prince’s Palace tour was something I had never crossed off my to-do list until last summer.

My social obligations and the timing of the tours often got in the way. However, when I finally made it, the experience was absolutely worth the wait.

Seeing the architecture, history, and art up close was truly unique and wonderful. I was also lucky enough to visit while they had a special Princess Grace exhibit showcasing some of her never-before-seen fashion items and photography.

As a total old Hollywood and fashion lover, it added an intimate touch to the tour, making it even more memorable. The blend of historical significance and personal artifacts made for an enriching and unforgettable experience.

Essential Visitor Information

Opening Hours and Seasonal Closures

The palace is open for public tours from about April to October, which is perfect because that’s when most tourists visit the Côte d’Azur.

Typically, the hours are from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, but the last entry is often an hour before closing.

And keep in mind, sometimes they close unexpectedly for official ceremonies or state functions, so definitely check their official website before you go.

Trust me, you’ll want to give yourself at least 2-3 hours to really soak it all in without feeling rushed. We spent about 3 hours there, exploring every nook and cranny. I was filming, and there was a special exhibit, which made our visit a bit longer than usual.

But even without those extras, it’s such a beautiful place, you’ll want to take your time exploring, as the history and architecture are next level.

Ticket Office and Admission Prices

Tickets are essential for entry and can be purchased online or at the on-site ticket office located at Place du Palais.

The price of a ticket for an adult is €10, while a discount ticket for children aged 6–17 and students costs €5. You can also purchase combined tickets that let you visit both the palace and the Prince of Monaco’s car collection, which is what we did (highly recommend both).

These combined tickets are slightly cheaper than buying tickets for these attractions separately. You can buy a ticket to the palace in the souvenir shop located on the west side of the square in front of the palace.

I booked ours online the same day in the middle of September with no problems, but if you’re visiting during peak tourist season, you might want to book early to ensure availability.

Access and Parking Details

So because the Palais Princier de Monaco is basically on top of a huge hill, visiting requires some planning. Vehicles registered outside Monaco and Alpes-Maritimes may face restrictions accessing the vicinity of the palace.

Parking des Pêcheurs is the recommended parking spot, with a ten-minute uphill walk to the palace. Alternatively, public buses 1 and 2 stop at Place de la Visitation, which is closer to the palace’s entrance and requires less walking.

You can also just walk from the port, but keep in mind it’s quite uphill, so it may not be the best option for people with mobility issues.

My dad and I opted to call a taxi to take us to the top, since we took the train in, and enjoyed a long leisurely lunch in Monte Carlo before needing to be in La Rocher (aka the Old Town, where the palace is located).

After the tour, we walked down the pathway to enjoy the stunning views of the marina and Monte Carlo on our way to the car museum. It was much easier going down than climbing up, especially for my dad, who has a bad knee.

Also, keep in mind, Uber doesn’t operate in Monaco, so you’ll need to download the Monaco taxi app, called Taxi Monaco.

Accessibility and Visitor Guidelines

Because the Prince’s Palace of Monaco is a historical site, wheelchair accessibility is quite difficult because of quite a few steps and older architecture.

The Prince’s Palace of Monaco does allow service animals like guide dogs, but it generally doesn’t allow pets.

The audio guide, which comes with the tickets, is incredibly helpful for hearing and learning all about the history of Monaco, the artwork, and the architecture.

You can also download the Palais Monaco App if you want to use your own headphones.

The most important thing is to follow the guidelines provided by the palace to respect the premises and other visitors.

The tour of the Prince’s Palace of Monaco primarily takes you through the majestic Grand Apartments, and let me tell you, it’s an absolutely gorgeous experience, especially if you love history, architecture, or interior design.

The Carabiniers du Prince, in their crisp uniforms, perform this ceremonial duty without fail. Visitors gather to watch this ritual, which showcases a blend of military precision and regal pageantry.

I have to admit, I haven’t yet made it to the Changing of the Guard Ceremony. I always seem to get sidelined by either a late night in Antibes with friends, where I stay when I’m back in the Côte d’Azur, or by a leisurely lunch at Il Terrazino, my favorite restaurant in Monte Carlo that’s near the train station (highly recommend the penne arrabbiata).

Even though I haven’t seen it in person, I’ve heard from many that it’s a beautiful and historic ceremony. With this, you get to witness the Prince’s personal assemblage of vintage and luxury vehicles, which was just truly fascinating. They even had some of the old F1 cars!

Tickets can be bought online or at the palace ticket office. The biggest detail, is to check ticket availability beforehand as combined offers have specific terms.

We did this and absolutely loved it. You definitely have to give yourself plenty of time to do both, but it was so worth it. Walking down from the castle to the car collection near the port took us maybe 25 minutes. The journey itself was enjoyable, with beautiful views along the way.

And seeing the Prince’s collection of classic cars was a true highlight of our visit, especially for my dad. The variety and history of the vehicles were truly impressive.

You can stroll through the old town or visit the opulent Casino de Monte-Carlo across the way in Monte Carlo. Or enjoy the scenic beauty at Port Hercule, a bustling harbor offering yacht views and local cuisine.

After exploring the palace, I loved wandering through the old town. The narrow streets and charming shops make it a delightful experience, especially for photographers.

The Casino de Monte-Carlo is another must-see, I swing by there all the time for a martini. Its opulence and grandeur are truly something to behold, even if you’re just there to admire the architecture and grab a cocktail from the public bar.

Port Hercule is also perfect for a leisurely afternoon. The harbor is bustling with activity, and the views of the yachts are spectacular.

If you have the time, I highly recommend taking a stroll along the harbor and soaking in the vibrant atmosphere. Monaco has so much to offer, and everything is conveniently close to the palace, making it easy to experience a little bit of everything, even if you’re just there for the day.

Alternatively, for a more direct path, Rue Colonel Bellando de Castro leads you straight to the heart of Monaco’s old town.

Surrounded by authentic Monegasque architecture, the Place de la Visitation provides a serene atmosphere away from the bustle, where you can absorb the principality’s storied past.

The Rampe Major stairway provided a beautiful, scenic descent, making the journey as enjoyable as the destination. We used this route to go down to the car museum, and the views were absolutely stunning.
