Like many of you, I’m the type of girl who for years packed at the last minute, meaning I’d most likely be throwing my jewelry into a pocket of my luggage.
Unsurprisingly, by the time I got to my destination, my necklaces were in knots, leaving me to spend my vacation time trying to untangle them.
I may still be a last-minute packer, but thankfully with all my travel, I’ve learned a thing or two about keeping my jewelry organized and my necklaces tangle-free.
I promise, it’s easier than it looks to keep your jewelry organized while you travel.
Just follow this guide on how to pack necklaces for travel and you’ll never see another tangled necklace when you unpack.
Skip Ahead
I finally got serious about my jewelry storage a few years ago, when I left NYC for a while in pursuit of full travel.
My travel jewelry box is one of my favorite purchases from that time in my life.
I knew I had to get serious about staying organized while on the road, and this seemed like a no trainer.
Below are some of my favorite travel jewelry box options.
Do you have lots of delicate necklaces?
Try a jewelry roll organizer the next time you’re packing.
It’s basically just a super soft cloth that you roll up. The best part is that it’s smaller than a jewelry box and the soft fabric will protect your necklaces from any scratching while on the go.
Check out some of the most popular travel jewelry roll organizers below.
This is one of the most original solutions to jewelry storage while traveling.
My friend Olivia has been doing this for years with her jewelry and it’s brilliant.
My only complaint is that necklaces still will tangle, even if they’re in their own compartment.
I’d probably be more likely to use this type of case for rings and earrings, and only for necklaces in a pinch.
Below are some of my favorite pill call options for jewelry storage on the go:
Cute and realistic looking macaron shape storage box, easy to open and stay closed nicely. Great to use when you travel.
One of the easiest and cheapest ways to keep your necklaces untangled is to use a straw.
Just run the chain through the straw and re-hook the clasp.
Next, find a safe place to store them.
When I use this packing method, I’ll put them between clothes in my carry-on luggage to keep them safe.
If you’ve got big chunky necklaces, the easiest way to safely pack them is to lay them between two sheets of plastic wrap.
I’m a big fan of the Glad Press’ n’ Seal version, but any kind will do.
You can absolutely try this method to pack more delicate jewelry, though I prefer to put my more delicate jewelry somewhere a bit more protected.
If you’re packing at the last minute and in a hurry, grab a washcloth or two.
You can either sandwich your jewelry between them in your luggage, which is perfect for chunky chains, or roll up more delicate jewelry inside them.
Just keep the chain straight and use rubber bands to secure each end of the washcloth roll.
Bubble wrap works wonders while moving, so it only makes sense it would work well to store jewelry on the go.
I’d only use bubble wrap to secure really special pieces, as it takes up a lot of room in your luggage compared to some of the other options on the list.
Similar to the straw, just thread your necklace through the center of the toilet paper roll, then re-clasp it.
I like to secure mine on the roll with a bit of tape just to keep some of the more delicate chains from moving around too much.
This option is great, since it upcycles the cardboard of the roll.
Plus, all of us last-minute packers are pretty much guaranteed to have some toilet paper in the house.
Okay, so this is a method I would probably only use if I was carrying a garment bag with me, or if I was traveling in my car.
Grab a few hangers and use them to keep your clothes looking neat, and necklaces untangled.
Just hang up your outfit, then grab whatever necklace you want and layer it on top of the outfit by hanging it off the middle of the hanger.
One of my friends was moving a few months ago and used this trick as a last-minute resort, leaving me completely impressed.
Either buy or use left over shelf liner, then lay your necklace out, and roll it up in the liner.
I like to tape the top of necklace down just to keep it from sliding while rolling the liner up.
After, grab two rubber bands and secure the top and bottom of the roll to keep your necklace safe.
I hope this post helps you find the perfect method to pack your necklaces for travel.
