I had just booked a solo trip to Paris, complete with a long layover in New York and another in London, basically a 24-hour travel day that would put any piece of luggage to the ultimate test.

Over my long weekend away, this carry-on was my constant companion through 5 flights, 3 buses, 4 car rides, and countless train journeys. 

It endured being pulled over cobblestone streets, pavement, carpet, up and down steps, and escalators. 

In short, it faced every possible travel scenario, including running through airports and cities because I’m always cutting it optimistically close, and I was eager to see if it could live up to its luxurious reputation.

I absolutely loved wheeling this bag around New York City and Paris. The wheel performance really shines when your bag gets heavy. They track easily and corner smoothly, which is perfect for keeping one hand free for your phone or boarding pass.

If you’re particular about component quality, you’ll be pleased to know that Carl Friedrik uses higher-end Hinomoto wheels. These Japanese-engineered ball-bearing wheels are renowned for allowing smooth movement across all kinds of terrains.

Dragging this carry-on around the uneven streets of NYC and Paris was surprisingly comfortable, as was running through Heathrow in London on my layover, thanks to these high-quality spinner wheels.

The Carl Friedrik Carry-On offers a clean, split-case layout that prioritizes packing speed over fussy compartments. I really like that the interior keeps your items contained without forcing you into a rigid system.

You pack behind a main divider panel with a zippered pocket on it, so if you like minimal structure, this setup works well for packing cubes and folded stacks. 

If you prefer lots of built-in organizers, you might want to add some pouches.

The Carl Friedrik Carry-On has a telescoping trolley handle that feels tight and sturdy in use, with minimal side-to-side play. 

I quickly found out, as i ran through the airport to catch my flight to Paris, that this steadiness is fantastic for keeping a straight line in crowded terminals and narrow aisles.

I noticed right away how little the handle wiggled, which matches the “precision-fit” feel you get when you extend and retract it. 

Here’s what you’ll notice while rolling:

• Cleaner Tracking: When you steer with one hand, it stays straight.
• Less Handle Chatter: Even on uneven flooring, it’s smooth.

If you ever need to use the warranty, you start by submitting a claim through the company’s warranty form. And if you need any guidance before filing, you can always reach out to their support email listed on the warranty page.

Here’s what’s covered under the Carl Friedrik warranty:

• Defects in materials and workmanship that affect luggage functionality. Examples include broken zippers, locks, handles, or wheels that fail under normal use conditions.

Performance

I took the Carl Friedrik Carry-On X on an almost 24-hour travel day starting in Palm Beach, Florida, with a brief stop in New York, before heading to Paris via London. I was on planes, trains, buses, and more with this bag, so it really got put to the test, especially since I’m an over-packer, with a habit of cutting it close to departure times.

I immediately noticed the Carry-On X rolls with minimal effort on its four spinner wheels, which is a lifesaver in tight terminals and slow boarding lines. 

It stays easy to steer even when you’re carrying a personal item on your shoulder, so you make fewer mid-walk corrections. 

Running for trains and planes was a breeze, and it handled all surfaces beautifully, from smooth airport floors to the uneven streets of New York. 

Dodging crowds was also effortless thanks to its smooth tracking and quick pivots.

And the hardshell, lock, and zipper all worked great, providing a secure and easy-to-access compartment for my belongings. The bag’s slightly smaller cabin footprint compared to many U.S. sized carry-ons means you need tighter packing discipline, but it wasn’t a deal-breaker for me, and worked well for European airlines. Despite its size, it fit a surprising amount of items.

The zipper system was incredibly convenient, especially during security checks and quick access situations. Its modest depth made it easier to slot into narrow overhead spaces. 

Additionally, the polycarbonate shell tends to hide day-to-day marks better than softer finishes, which is a huge plus for maintaining a clean look.

During my journey, I found that on gate-check risk flights, packing tighter and keeping essentials in the front pocket allowed for quicker transitions. 

This bag truly proved its worth on my long travel day, handling everything I threw at it with ease and style.

Horizn Studios M5 Carry-On

In contrast, the Horizn Studios M5 Carry-On features a more tech-savvy approach with integrated smart features like a removable power bank (if you buy it in Europe) and a durable aerospace-grade polycarbonate shell, catering to tech-oriented travelers who value connectivity and convenience.

I’ve traveled around Europe and the US with both cabin bags, and have to say it’s a close tie, but for me, Carl Friedrik’s The Core Carry-On beats my M5 because it’s slightly more comfortable to wheel around, especially the shape of the grip on the handle. Plus, it’s also slightly bigger!

Away Bigger Carry-On

I think we’ve all noticed by now that the Carl Friedrik Core Carry-On offers a sophisticated design with premium leather detailing and a lightweight polycarbonate shell, which perfect for travelers seeking timeless elegance and durability. 

Chances are you’re familiar with the millennial favorite, Away, and their popular Bigger Carry-On, which provides a more spacious interior and a durable polycarbonate exterior, making it ideal for travelers who need extra packing space. 

I’ve traveled extensively with my Away over the last six years, and while it’s durable, and fits a ton, it’s not always practical. My Carl Friedrik is quickly becoming my new favorite carry-on to grab, because it’s so easy to wheel around cities and airports comfortably, even when running to catch a flight!

Even though the Away is a popular choice in the States and frequently seen during travels, what I love about the Carl Friedrik, is that it stands out for its unique and luxurious aesthetic, making it a great option for those who prefer a distinctive, timeless, and less common carry-on.

I haven’t had the chance to test a Rimowa out yet, I can pretty much guarantee from word of mouth, it’s popular for a reason.

While Rimowa is often seen as the gold standard in luxury luggage, the Carl Friedrik stands out with its unique blend of style and craftsmanship, making it an excellent choice for those who value both aesthetics and functionality.

The Verdict

As a traveler who likes to be low key, functional, and chic, the Carl Friedrik The Core Carry-On is quickly becoming one of my favorite carry-ons to reach for when packing for trips.

While you do trade some packing volume for easier carry-on compliance on tighter aircraft, the benefits are well worth it.

The Makrolon polycarbonate exterior with leather accents not only looks chic but also offers durability, as highlighted in various reviews.

This carry-on is best for short trips and those who have tight packing habits. 

It’s perfect for travelers who prefer a sleek, understated design and don’t mind paying a bit more for high-end quality. 

As well as, ideal for people traveling to places like Europe, where carry-on dimensions are more restrictive compared to the U.S.

However, think twice if you routinely max out your carry-on capacity or if you prefer lots of built-in internal organizers. Also, if you’re looking for a budget option, this might not be for you.

In terms of what you care about, here’s what you get: ease of access with a quick open/close zipper system, a smaller footprint that fits easily in overhead bins, and a finish that aims to resist obvious wear, although scuffs can still happen.

This is truly one of my favorite carry-ons that I’ve had the pleasure of traveling with. While I’d be nervous if it ever had to be gate-checked because it does mark up a bit and I worry the leather detailing might get scuffed, I think it’s incredibly chic. 

I received so many compliments on the bag during my travels, and it was unique enough that I didn’t see anyone else with it. 

It also fits a surprising amount, was easy to lift into the overhead, and most importantly, was comfortable to wheel around cities.

If you’re open to the high luxury price point, then this is a fantastic carry-on bag. But if you want something more budget-friendly, this might not be the best fit for you. 

For those who travel frequently to places with more restrictive carry-on dimensions, this bag is a great choice. If you travel mainly in the U.S. and need a carry-on that fits a ton, you might want to consider other options.

Overall, this is a fantastic carry-on for anyone looking for a chic, well-built, luxe minimalist brand, at a great entry level price point compared to some of their other models.
