So, when LEVEL8 reached out to offer me one of their carry-ons, I was thrilled.

As a fashionable ex-New Yorker who loves keeping things simple, I immediately said yes when I saw their chic, minimalist approach to luggage.

And at this point, I’ve become a bit of a carry-on expert. In fact, I once lived out of my first carry-on for 6 months in Europe and I’ve been quoted multiple times in Forbes as one, so I’ve really learned what it takes for a suitcase to go the distance.

Ideally, luggage should be an investment, so it’s so important to choose luggage that’s built to last and designed with purpose, so no matter how long you’re away, you stay organized on go.

In this Level8 Luminous Carry-On Review, I’ll share my personal experiences with the suitcase that promises users that it’ll make your journeys smoother and more sustainable.

Their luggage features Covestro polycarbonate shells, making their products incredibly tough yet lightweight, which basically means their suitcases can handle the rigors of travel without weighing you down.

But LEVEL8’s commitment goes beyond just making great luggage. They use recycled PET fabric in the interior lining of several key styles, including the Adventure, Polaris, Creator, and their new Urban Backpack.

They also use recyclable cardboard boxes for all their packaging, which helps reduce waste without adding more than what’s needed.

I really love how their eco-friendly approach gives plastic waste a second life and makes every trip a little more responsible. This is a brand you can feel good about investing in, with its continued dedication to sustainability that means they’re not just protecting your belongings but also the planet.

One of the first things to think about when researching new luggage is the length of your trip. The LEVEL8 Luminous Carry-On can handle anything from a weekend getaway to a month-long adventure, depending on your packing style.

If your minimalist packing skills are lacking, then you’ll likely find this perfect for a weekend or week away, depending on how much you like to pack.

Also, rolling a carry-on bag around Europe in the summer heat is much easier than managing a huge checked bag or monstrous backpack. Trust me, I’ve tested it over multiple European summers, and your back will absolutely thank you.

Another non-negotiable is 360° spinner wheels, which make navigating through crowded airports, cobblestone streets in France, and bustling New York sidewalks a breeze. And adjustable telescopic handles, like this one, are comfortable and perfect for stacking other bags on top if needed.

Another advantage of this carry-on is that it fits the dimension restrictions for most airlines, including budget carriers that are strict about measurements (especially if you opt for the smaller 18” model).

Every suitcase in this day and age really should have a built-in TSA-approved lock, adding an extra layer of security for your valuables. Level8 delivers here with one that’s easy to set and works well.

When your LEVEL8 Luminous Carry-On arrives, you’re greeted with a sleek suitcase and dust bag keeping it pristine from the moment it leaves the box to your first adventure.

One thoughtful touch is the plastic grab handle on top of the box, which made carrying it from my mail room to my apartment so much easier. Immediately, as I was carrying it I thought about how this design shows LEVEL8’s commitment to convenience right from the start.

Overall, the unboxing experience felt really premium, which was really refreshing, I love the attention to detail LEVEL8 puts into its packaging.

One of the best parts of picking out luggage is deciding on the perfect color.

It’s an enormous commitment, and it should feel authentic to your style, ideally for years to come.

Luckily, LEVEL8 Luminous Carry-On has a palette of muted and vibrant tones, so you can easily find a color that matches your personal style.

For a timeless and versatile option, go for classic black or navy, which are perfect for standing the test of travel and blending seamlessly with any outfit.

If you prefer something more distinctive, opt for soft pink or creamy white, adding a touch of elegance and uniqueness to your travel gear.

Obviously, I went for the white one, and while it does show dirt more easily (which is to be expected), I love how it looks great with any outfit. It has a really chic, premium feel when navigating around the airport, and always go with my airport outfit.

This bag is a perfect fit for most overhead compartments, since its size strikes the ideal balance between capacity and convenience, ensuring you can pack efficiently without worrying about airline restrictions.

Before you travel, it’s always a good idea to check the specific size allowances of your favorite airlines to confirm that this carry-on meets their requirements.

Choose Your Size: Level8 has multiple options for this style, from 18’’, 20’’, 24’’, or 28’’ to fit your unique travel needs. The carry-on version is available in two sizes:

• 18’’ Carry-On Overall: 13.7” L x 9.2″ W x 20.2” H | 7.1 lbs | 39 L

• 20’’ Carry-On Overall: 14.5” L x 9.2” W x 21.5” H | 7.7 lbs | 40 L

The 20″ version, used in this review, gives a solid amount of space, while remaining lightweight and easy to handle.

For longer trips, you can also opt for the 24’’ or 28’’ checked luggage options in the same stylish design. Or better yet, invest in a whole matching set!

Hardshell

Made from German-made Makrolon® polycarbonate, this suitcase is durable enough to withstand the rigors of travel while giving you peace of mind that your items are safe.

The diamond-textured surface is also designed to minimize visible scratches, which is a cool idea, but I do have some concerns about cleaning it, since the dirt could potentially get stuck in the little crevices, making it a bit challenging to clean once it’s been checked a few times.

However, it’s worth noting, it’s gotten a lot of sand stuck on it from being in the back of my car (I live near a beach), and it brushes off very easily, but you do have to brush it for it to fall off in areas.

Spinner Wheels

Now, let’s talk about those spinner wheels. The ultra-quiet, 360° wheels make it a breeze to glide through busy terminals, with minimal noise.

These wheels were made to handle heavy loads and long-distance travel, so whether you’re rushing to catch a flight or navigating through a crowded city, this bag truly moves as swiftly as you do.

But here’s a heads-up, they roll so easily that you need to watch where you park it. Seriously, this bag has tried to roll away from me a couple of times!

TSA-Approved Locks

When you’re traveling, security is a big deal, especially if you ever have to check your luggage, or might have it held before or after check-in at a hotel.

The LEVEL8 Luminous Carry-On has you covered with a built-in TSA-approved lock, which honestly should just be standard on all cases at this point.

Setting the lock is pretty straightforward. The first thing you’ll usually need to hold down a reset button with a pen or something similar while you enter your chosen code. Once you release the button, your new combination is set.

Just make sure to remember your code, ideally picking something that’s not easy to guess.

Here’s a quick guide to setting your lock:

Lock Securely: After setting the combination, make sure it’s locked properly.

Organization and Storage

One of the first things you’ll notice when opening this carry-on is its smart design for organization. The dual-compartment layout makes packing a breeze, giving you plenty of room to keep things organized.

On one side, there’s a zip cover with two mesh pockets, which is perfect for smaller essentials like toiletries, chargers, or even small souvenirs like magnets and tickets collected during your travels (what I always use them for).

The other side has an open mesh zippered flap that spans the entire side, which helps keep your clothes slightly compressed during travel. This is also the side you need to strategically pack, since you’ll be packing around the luggage handle bars.

Even though the suitcase doesn’t have an expansion feature, it still feels very spacious. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I could fit in, especially without compression straps.

To make your packing even more efficient, LEVEL8 even offers a bundle option that comes with packing cubes. However, I do want to note that the packing cubes they sent me, shown above, aren’t the ones included in the bundle. The bundled cubes appear to be made of thinner material that would work better with the bag. They also appear possibly to be compression cubes, unlike the ones I have (the website doesn’t specify).

The cubes in my photo are their cheaper 4-cube packing set that doesn’t offer compression, and honestly, I wouldn’t recommend them for this bag because they’re too tall to fit properly without a struggle when closing the suitcase, however they are lovely for staying organized.

Trolley Handle

When you check out the LEVEL8 Luminous Carry-On, one of the first things you’ll notice is the thoughtful design of the trolley handle.

I really like that the handle has multiple height settings to fit your height perfectly. It also glides smoothly and locks into place with a satisfying lack of major wobble.

This stability is a lifesaver, especially when you’re weaving through crowded airport terminals, running to catch last call (I’ve tested it).

Product Warranty

When you invest in a LEVEL8 carry-on, you’re getting more than just a suitcase, you’re getting peace of mind with a lifetime warranty.

To activate your warranty, just remember to register your bag on the LEVEL8 website. If you ever run into any issues, just contact customer support with your warranty claim, and make sure you have your proof of purchase and registration details ready.

Just a head’s up, the lifetime warranty doesn’t cover cosmetic damage like scratches or normal wear and tear. It’s also limited to the original owner and can’t be transferred.

And one thing to keep in mind: shipping costs for warranty services aren’t covered by LEVEL8, so be rerady to pay if you need to send your bag in.

It’s always smart to review the terms on their official warranty page to understand the full extent of the coverage and any exclusions that might apply.

Performance

I was so excited to get out and test this bag, specifically because of the unique German Makrolon® polycarbonate hard shell, with a diamond-textured surface, meant to hide scuffs and scratches.

And boy, did I put it to the test with a few little weekends away.

The wheels can make or break your travel experience, and the silent 360° spinner wheels are fantastic, gliding through the airport, city, and pavement with ease.

The only downside is that this bag sometimes seems to have a mind of its own and rolls off if I’m not paying attention. This happened multiple times, so now I know I have to “park” it against something before walking away.

Luckily, I did notice this bag loves to solo travel before getting on the subway. That whole time, I was very cognizant of keeping a hand or foot on my bag to prevent it from going on a little adventure (can you imagine if it had rolled off into the tracks).

And let me tell you, the durability was really tested between my travels, and the times it ran off and into bushes and pavement. Other than some dirt on the bottom, and a few scratches on the black part around the wheels, the rest of the bag still looks great!

Maneuvering this bag around, was made easy with the handle. It’s adjustable, which was a lifesaver when I was running around New York, the airport, and Florida. And because of this, it’s super comfortable to walk with, or in my case, race to the gate with!

Plus, the side and top handles are great for quickly grabbing it from overhead bins or tight spaces. I also checked in every airport airline sizer I could find, and am happy to report, it qualifies as a carry-on for most airlines.

Inside, the carry-on is really well thought out, and it really felt like it had a great amount of space. I especially love the two zip mesh pockets, which are perfect for storing little souvenirs or things I might need to find easily, like my chargers, without having to open up the whole interior.

Security-wise, the built-in TSA-approved lock gave me peace of mind when I needed to have my hotel hold my luggage before and after check-in.

Because, let’s face it, knowing your stuff is secure lets you focus on enjoying your trip rather than worrying about your bag.

Finally, its weight and size are compliant with most airline carry-on limits. At 7.7 lbs, it’s pretty standard for a hard-shell carry-on, though carrying it up non-accessible subway steps was a bit of a workout, partially thanks to how much I was able to fit in here.

Unlike other suitcases that get all scratched up, this one’s diamond-textured surface does a fantastic job of hiding scuffs and scratches, which is a lifesaver for someone like me who’s always on the go.
