Bandolier has built a cult following for their chic, celebrity-favorite phone cases, but is the Miller Bag, their structured, all-in-one crossbody, actually worth the premium price for a busy traveler?

As someone who is constantly on the move between Palm Beach and New York City, I’ve been on a mission to find a bag that balances high-end style with actual, real-world functionality.

For a long time, my go-to was a simple Lululemon crossbody, then my trusty Fabletics crossbody, but as my travel schedule picked up, I found myself craving something with a more structured and polished look that could transition from a morning walk to a nice dinner.

Over the last month, I’ve been putting the Bandolier Miller to the ultimate test, both as an everyday carry and as a travel crossbody bag.

It’s been my constant companion through crowded airport terminals, brisk morning walks, and the non-stop chaos of NYC streets.

I’ve truly given this bag the ultimate test, shoving it under airplane seats, navigating through security lines, and wearing through miles of city pavement.

All to see if this “phone-first” bag could truly handle my “survival kit” of essentials while maintaining its sophisticated silhouette.

If you’re considering investing in a stylish, high-quality leather crossbody that promises to keep you hands-free without sacrificing elegance, keep reading.

Here’s my detailed Bandolier Miller Bag review after a month of use, to help you find out if this bag is the upgrade you’ve been looking for after my whirlwind month of testing.

Overview of Bandolier

ally walking in Central Park during summer in nyc - wearing the bandolier miller crossbody

Many people recognize Bandolier as the modern accessories brand that successfully blends high-end style with practical everyday function when it comes to carrying your phone on the go.

The brand was founded in Los Angeles in 2013 by Maggie Drake and Colleen Karis, born out of the simple and modern need to keep smartphones accessible and secure without the constant fumbling associated with traditional handbags.

By pioneering the luxury “high-tech accessory” category, Bandolier effectively transformed the smartphone into a wearable piece of fashion, creating a niche that has redefined how we carry our most essential devices.

Bandolier also pays close attention to the small details that matter to people on the move, such as exterior pockets for quick phone access, secure card slots, and high-quality hardware that maintains its finish over time.

Over the years, the brand has seen a massive surge in popularity, developing from a local California secret into a global phenomenon. Celebrities like Blake Lively, Selena Gomez, and Martha Stewart have all been seen wearing the brand, cementing its status as a must-have item.

This high-profile visibility helped establish Bandolier boom as the “it-bag” for women who prioritize a hands-free lifestyle, making it a common sight everywhere from red carpets to busy city streets and international travel hubs.

The brand’s design philosophy centers on clean, rectangular silhouettes with rounded corners that emphasize both durability and elegance, with most of their products crafted from premium pebble leather and other textured finishes that are designed to withstand the rigors of daily use while maintaining a sophisticated look.

One of the most defining features of the brand is its modular approach to fashion through interchangeable straps. This system allows users to personalize their everyday carry by attaching different strap styles to most of their bags and cases, making it easy to change a look from casual to formal with no need to replace the entire accessory.

This versatility has earned the brand a loyal following, with customers frequently praising the consistent build quality and the brand’s helpful customer service when discussing their purchases.

Ultimately, Bandolier markets its products to those with active, on-the-go lifestyles where organization and accessibility are paramount. They specifically engineered their pieces to keep essentials close at hand while remaining compact and comfortable enough for all-day wear, which is ideal for travel days.

As the brand continues to grow, it remains a favorite for those who need to stay connected and organized without sacrificing their personal style, whether they are navigating a daily commute or traveling across the globe.

Things to Consider Before Buying the Bandolier Miller Bag

bandolier the miller crossbody

Before you hit that buy button, you really want to think about how you are going to use this bag every day.

The Miller has that super handy phone pocket on the outside which is a total game-changer for quick photos or checking your maps, but because it is a structured rectangle, it does not have a ton of give.

You’ll also definitely want to lay out your daily essentials and check them against the size of the bag because if you are someone who carries a lot of extra items just in case, this might feel a bit tight for your needs.

That said, it fits enough for a day out exploring or running around by most standards.

Since the bag’s made of genuine pebble or embossed leather, you’ll want to keep in mind that it is going to age and change as you use it.

This is actually the thing I love the most about real leather, because it gets that beautiful patina and feels more personal over time, but it is definitely different from a synthetic bag that stays looking exactly the same forever or falls apart easily.

You should just expect a little natural wear and be ready to give it some love if you want it to stay looking fresh through all your travels and daily commutes. That said, after a month of constant use, mine still looks brand new.

The Miller’s organizational structure is ideal for minimalists seeking simplicity. You get a nice interior zip pocket for your cards or cash and that outer phone pocket, which is great for keeping things separated, but it is definitely not going to replace your big everyday tote.

It’s also worth talking about the price because it sits in that interesting middle ground. So, it’s not exactly a cheap, mass-market find, but it also isn’t a four-figure luxury designer bag, which can make the decision a little tougher if you are on the fence.

Right now, the Miller runs $218 in the pebble leather finishes and $228 if you go for one of the croc options.

And, I don’t think I need to point this out, but you won’t be fitting a water bottle or a tablet in here, so it is really meant for those times when you just want the basics close to your chest and your hands completely free to enjoy the moment.

It’s also worth talking about the price because it sits in that interesting middle ground. It’s not exactly a budget find from a big box store, but it also isn’t a four-figure luxury designer bag, which can make the decision a little tougher if you are on the fence.

You are really paying for the quality of the leather and that specific design that makes life so much easier when you are on the go.

So, if you are someone who travels a lot or just hates digging for your phone, it is a solid investment, but it is definitely worth weighing how much you will actually use those specific features before you commit.

Bandolier Miller Bag & Unboxing

What is in the box?

  • The Miller bag in your chosen leather finish
  • The matching adjustable crossbody strap
  • A protective dust bag for storage

The unboxing experience is actually really lovely and feels quite high end without being wasteful. Bandolier uses minimal but elegant packaging that makes it feel like you are opening a little gift to yourself.

Everything is tucked in securely so the leather and hardware arrive in perfect condition, and it definitely gives off that premium vibe right from the start, complete with a dust bag.

Hardware and Design Features

Bandolier Miller Bag Material and Color Options

bandolier the miller crossbody - travel bags

Bandolier usually has a great range of colors to choose from, ranging from their classic neutrals to some really fun limited seasonal shades.

When I was picking mine out, I was torn between the black pebble leather with the pewter hardware or the brown croc finish.

I’d originally had my heart set on the black croc version, but unfortunately, it was completely sold-out.

Looking back, I think that might have been a blessing in disguise because the black pebble is just so much more practical for a bag you are going to be using every single day. That said, they do have a really cute croc limited clutch that I’m still eyeing up.

The texture of the pebble leather is fantastic at hiding those little scuffs or scratches that naturally happen when you are traveling, whereas a more decorative finish like croc can sometimes be a bit more delicate (I haven’t seen Bandolier’s croc in person to know about theirs).

One thing you’ll definitely want to pay attention to is the hardware, because Bandolier usually gives you a choice between gold or pewter tones.

I went with the pewter because I tend to wear cooler-toned jewelry and I liked the slightly edgier look, but the gold option is beautiful if you want something that feels a bit warmer and more classic.

It’s a tiny detail, but since the hardware is such a prominent part of the bag’s design, it really helps to pick the one that matches the rest of your everyday accessories or even the buttons on your favorite coat.

Also, fair warning, their Bandolier logo on the front is gold no matter which finish you pick.

If you aren’t a fan of basic black, they do also release some really pretty seasonal colors like beige, blush, or even deep greens, though those tend to sell out much faster since they are usually smaller runs, so you’ll want to keep an eye out.

The great thing about the Miller is that since the base colors are so solid and timeless, you can always use those interchangeable straps to add a pop of color or a bold pattern later on.

It makes the bag feel like a blank canvas that you can dress up or down depending on your mood or where you are heading.

Bandolier Miller Bag Dimensions

bandolier miller crossbody on a plane - ally travels - travel crossbody

If you’re looking for the exact specs to see if your gear will fit, here is the quick breakdown of the Miller’s dimensions and features.

It’s a great “small-to-medium” size that stays slim against your body while still being surprisingly functional.

And is easy to slide into the top of your personal item bag, if you’re planning on using this as a travel crossbody.

The Measurements:

  • Strap Length: Adjustable from 37.5″ to 58.5″ Long
  • Bag Dimensions: 5″ Wide x 8.25″ Long x 1 5/8″ Deep
  • Exterior Phone Pocket: 7″ x 4″ High (Perfect for quick access)
  • Interior Zip Pocket: 5.75″ Wide x 3.5″ High (Great for cards or cash)
  • Strap Width: 1.5″ Wide (This is that “wider” strap we talked about for extra comfort!)

Bandolier Miller Bag Zipper

Bandolier Miller Bag Review The Best Travel

One thing you really want to pay attention to on any travel bag is the zipper, and the Miller definitely does not disappoint here. The main compartment features a high-quality metal zipper that feels incredibly sturdy and smooth to pull, which is exactly what you want when you are constantly reaching in and out for your wallet or keys.

There is nothing worse than a zipper that snags when you are in a rush, but the hardware on this bag has a really nice weight to it and glides easily every single time.

Plus, because it’s a full zip closure across the top, you get that extra peace of mind knowing that your valuables won’t accidentally slide out while you are on the move.

The zipper pull itself is also a great size, making it easy to grab even if you are moving quickly through a busy airport or navigating a crowded street.

It matches the rest of the metal hardware on the bag, whether you went with the gold or the pewter, so it keeps that polished and cohesive look. I also really appreciate that the interior pocket has its own dedicated zipper as well, which makes it easy to keep my things safe on the go.

This is where I usually keep my most important items, like my ID or emergency cash, and having that double layer of zippered security makes me feel a lot more confident when I’m navigating crowded tourist spots or public transportation.

After using it for a month as my everyday carry in NYC and Jupiter, and on flights to JFK/Palm Beach, I can tell you the zippers have held up perfectly without any sticking or signs of wear.

It’s one of those tiny details that really shows the difference between a budget bag and a well-made accessory like this one.

Organization and Storage

Outer Pockets

Bandolier Miller Bag Review The Best Travel front pocket

The outer pocket is probably my favorite feature of the Miller because it is just so practical for how we actually use our phones today.

It has a secure snap closure and is specifically molded to fit most modern smartphones without you having to force it or worry about stretching out that beautiful top-grain leather.

I found it incredibly easy to slide my phone in and out during my month of testing, whether I was pulling up a digital boarding pass at the airport or grabbing a quick photo of the skyline in NYC

Having your phone right there on the outside of the bag instead of buried at the bottom of a main compartment is a total game-changer for staying organized while you are on the move.

You should try to keep in mind that since this pocket is 7″x 4″ and has a fixed, non-expandable shape, so it’s really designed for your phone and not much else.

It even has two small vents at the bottom, I assume to help keep your phone from overheating.

That said, I want to note that especially when you’re using this compartment for your phone, the bag can become a tad top- heavy.

It works perfectly for a slim device, but if you try to shove a bulky power bank or a thick wallet in there, the flap might not sit quite right, or it could look a bit lumpy.

That said, I easily stored some lip-gloss, a tampon, hand sanitizer (the Noshinku brand, which is my favorite and quite slim), and a lipstick in mine when I used it for a night out at the theater and on the town and then just carried my phone.

It’s definitely meant to be a low-profile spot for your most-used item, so it is best to keep your heavier gear in the main zippered compartment.

Interior Pockets

inside the bandolier the miller crossbody ally travels

The inside of the Miller is really all about that “less is more” vibe, featuring one main compartment that is surprisingly roomy for such a slim bag.

I found that I could easily fit my small wallet, a pair of sunglasses, and my basic makeup or in-seat travel essentials without it ever feeling overstuffed.

Because the whole thing seals up with a sturdy zipper at the top, I never had to worry about my things spilling out when I tossed the bag into the top of my under the seat on my flight to JFK or while I was navigating a packed subway car in NYC

It’s the perfect amount of space for those of us who want to carry the essentials without being weighed down by a giant tote, or having to carry a less than fashionable day bag.

One of my favorite little details inside is the small zippered pocket stitched right into the lining. It’s the perfect spot for those tiny items that usually end up disappearing at the bottom of a bag, like your ID, some emergency cash, or even a spare hair tie.

I love using it to keep my cards and cash separate, or for keeping my lip gloss easy to find so I am not digging around for it every time I want a quick touch-up.

Having that extra layer of organization inside the main compartment really helps maintain that sleek silhouette while keeping all the essentials within reach.

Shoulder Strap

ally on a rooftop wearing the lululemon align dress and the bandolier miller crossbody bag in front of the empire state building

The Miller bag comes with a strap that you can easily adjust or take off. This is good because you can make it the perfect length for you.

You can wear it as a shorter shoulder bag if you want to keep it tucked under your arm or let it out longer to wear as a classic crossbody.

One thing I really like is that the strap included with the Miller is actually quite wide, which is a huge win for comfort because that extra width helps distribute the weight across your shoulder much better, making it significantly easier to wear for hours on end without it digging in like a thinner cord might.

There’s also some hardware on these straps, which is definitely durable. The metal clips and adjustable buckles feel very secure, and they actually stay in place once you set your preferred length.

Because of this, you won’t have to deal with the strap slowly sliding longer and longer while you are walking around, which is a common annoyance with cheaper bags.

Plus, the genuine leather construction of the strap itself feels premium and durable, so it can handle the constant movement of a busy travel schedule or a hectic day in the city.

Another nice touch is that you can un-clip the strap entirely whenever you want. This turns the Miller into a sleek, little hand-carried pouch or clutch, which is perfect if you are heading into a nice dinner and do not want the crossbody look.

Having the ability to go from a rugged day of travel to a polished evening look just by removing the strap is such a practical feature.

Oh, and did I mention there’s a small hook on the strap that you can clip a key-chain or their adorable Airpod holders onto.

If you haven’t already, check out their little Airpod pouch, it’s truly adorable and will save you a bit of space, keeping your headphones within reach and out of the bag.

It really highlights why this bag is such a favorite for people who need their accessories to work hard and look good in multiple different scenarios.

What about strap length?

The adjustable strap typically extends from about 37.5″ to 58.5″, letting you wear the bag crossbody or longer. A 1.5″ wide strap balances comfort with a sleek profile.

Product Warranty

If you’re looking for the quick facts on how Bandolier handles their gear after you buy it, here are the most important things to keep in mind:

  • 6-Month Warranty: You’re covered for half a year against manufacturing defects like hardware issues or stitching problems, though this warranty doesn’t include normal wear and tear or accidents.
  • 30-Day Returns: You have a 30-day window to return your bag as long as it is unused, has the original tags, and wasn’t a “Final Sale” item.
  • Free U.S. Exchanges: If you decide you want a different color or style, Bandolier offers free exchanges for customers in the United States.
  • Restocking Fee: If you opt for a refund instead of an exchange, there is a flat $8 fee deducted from your total.
  • Return Limits: To keep things fair, they limit customers to four returns within any six-month period.
  • Claim Requirements: If you ever need to use the warranty, make sure you have your original proof of purchase and some clear photos of the issue ready to go.

It’s a pretty straightforward system that gives you enough time to make sure the bag really works for your lifestyle without feeling like you are stuck if something goes wrong.

Performance

Ally Traveling in NYC LIRR from JFK with Bandolier Miller crossbody, Unbound Merino Travel Hoodie, Lululemon trousers, calk Luka duffel and carl Fredrik carry-on

I recently put the Bandolier Miller to the ultimate test during a packed month of travel and city life, taking it everywhere from the hectic terminals of major airports to the busy, uneven sidewalks of NYC

For a long time, my go-to for travel was my Lululemon crossbody, but switching to the Miller was an absolute game-changer.

The biggest difference I noticed immediately was the structure and style, which, especially in the city, is very important for an every-day carry.

While my athletic bags tend to be soft and can get a bit floppy or disorganized when you’re in a rush, the Miller holds its shape perfectly. It feels much more secure and polished, which is exactly what you want when you are juggling a carry-on and trying to find your boarding pass in a crowded line.

Spoiler alert, your passport will fit in the front pocket if your phone isn’t in there.

Navigating the airport with this crossbody was a breeze because of that exterior phone pocket. I didn’t have to unzip a single thing to grab my phone for security checks or to check my gate at the last minute.

It stayed right against my body, and because the strap is a generous 1.5 inches wide, I didn’t experience any of that annoying shoulder fatigue that usually kicks in after a few hours of walking through terminals.

Even when I was rushing to catch a flight, the bag stayed stable and didn’t bounce around, which gave me one less thing to worry about while I was cutting it close to departure time.

It was also easy to slide into the top of my personal item bag when the attendants at the gate started checking for extra bags.

Beyond the airport, this bag has become a staple for my daily routine in the city and even on my morning walks. It’s surprisingly versatile because it doesn’t look like a “travel bag” or an “everyday bag,” yet it performs just as well as both, assuming you’re only bringing the essentials.

On my walks, it holds my phone, keys, and a slim wallet without feeling bulky or getting in the way of my stride, and it handles the transition from a morning workout vibe to a lunch meeting in the city effortlessly, which is something my old nylon bags just couldn’t do.

In real-world use, the Miller really proved its worth by being both tough and stylish. The genuine top-grain leather handled the daily hustle of NYC without showing any signs of wear, and the pewter hardware stayed secure even when I was moving fast.

It didn’t matter if I was dodging crowds in Manhattan or slotting it into a narrow space on a plane, it felt compact and efficient.

This bag really felt like a massive upgrade for anyone who wants that hands-free lifestyle but needs a bit more structure and sophistication than a standard athletic crossbody can give. It handled everything I threw at it this month with total ease and looked great doing it.

How Much Can You Fit Inside?

bandolier the miller crossbody with all my in-flight essentials

You might look at the Miller and think it is just a fancy phone case with a strap, but I was honestly shocked at how much I could pack into this thing for my flight.

I actually took a video while I was in the air because I couldn’t believe I managed to fit almost my entire “survival kit” into such a sleek little silhouette.

It really is a masterclass in efficient packing because it forces you to be smart about what you bring, but it doesn’t actually make you leave the essentials behind.

In the main compartment, I was able to fit my wallet and my Peak Design mobile tripod, which is a must-have for me, along with my AirPods and a separate set of headphones for the plane’s entertainment system.

Even with those larger items, I still had room to tuck in all my little “just in case” items like a pack of gum, a Mid-Day Square snack for when I got hungry mid-flight, and my hand sanitizer.

It’s deep enough that things do not feel like they are being crushed, but slim enough to stay close to your side without feeling bulky.

What really impressed me was how many beauty and skincare bits I could slide into the gaps. I had my chapstick, a small moisturizer, and even a little bottle of hair oil to keep things fresh after hours of recycled airplane air.

Because of the way the bag is structured, I could stand these items up or tuck them into the interior zip pocket so they weren’t just rolling around at the bottom. My phone, of course, lived in its own dedicated exterior pocket, which meant it wasn’t taking up any of that precious interior space.

Even with all of that, the bag still zipped up easily and did not look like it was bulging at the seams. The bag did, however, become slightly top-heavy. I also wish there was a slim pocket at the back of the bag, I always find myself wanting to slide cards or small flat items back there.

If you are a minimalist who likes to stay organized, you will be really happy with how much this little bag can actually handle when you put it to the test.

Tomtoc Terra-T34 Light Crossbody Bag 3.5L

I’m actually reviewing this one next, so definitely stay tuned for that. It’s a fantastic choice if you need a bit more room than the Miller offers because it has a much larger 3.5L capacity and is crafted from a more flexible material.

It also has a utilitarian and tech-focused vibe that is perfect for carrying extra gear like a power bank or even a small camera.

And is also quite a bit cheaper, which is great if you are watching your budget. The only downside for me is that it doesn’t have that signature front phone pocket I love so much on the Bandolier, which makes a huge difference in how quickly you can grab your phone.

Lululemon Everywhere Belt Bag

This is a total classic in my family, and we have actually owned several of them over the years because they hold up so incredibly well.

It was my absolute go-to for the airport before I upgraded to the Miller and I still think it is a solid piece to have in your collection.

I love how lightweight it is, and the fact that you can just toss it in the wash if it gets dirty is a huge plus for travel. However, it definitely lacks that beautiful structure that makes the Miller feel so special and high-end.

While it’s a great budget-friendly pick for a morning walk or a quick grocery run, it just doesn’t feel quite as polished or sophisticated when you are heading out for a nice dinner the way the Miller does.

Quince Italian Leather Slingbag

If you love the premium leather feel of the Miller but want something that feels a bit more like a traditional handbag, this is a beautiful alternative.

It’s handcrafted in Florence from 100% Italian top-grain calfskin, so the quality is incredible for the price, which is usually around $102, which is very much on par with the Miller.

It’s also quite a bit deeper than the Miller (3 inches vs. 1.6 inches), making it a better choice if you need to carry bulkier items like a thick sunglasses case or a larger digital camera.

And has that same luxury vibe with gold hardware and a removable strap, but you do lose that dedicated external phone pocket that makes the Bandolier so unique (truly one of my favorite features).

It’s a fantastic “best of both worlds” pick if you want Italian luxury and more interior space, but I can’t imagine not having my phone pocket on travel days.

The Verdict

ally traveling with the quince carry-on quince leather weekender and bandolier crossbody pbi airport-5

What I Liked

  • Instant Phone Access: The 7″ x 4″ exterior molded pocket is the star of the show. My phone was always secure but instantly reachable for boarding passes or quick photos. I never had to fumble through the main compartment once, and it doubled great for lip-gloss and other small items on a night out when the main compartment had my portable charger taking up most of the space.
  • Premium Quality & Durability: The 100% genuine top-grain leather feels incredibly sturdy. I went with the black pebble finish, and it has been amazing at resisting scuffs and hiding daily wear. The hardware and stitching feel sturdy, like they are built to last for years.
  • Polished Versatility: Unlike my other travel/day bags, the Miller has a rigid, sophisticated silhouette. It looks just as good with a casual walking outfit as it does with a dressier look for a night out.
  • The Comfort of the Wide Strap: The 1.5″ strap width is a huge win. It distributes weight so much better than thinner straps, meaning no shoulder fatigue even after a full day of travel. Plus, the D-ring is a lifesaver for clipping on my keys or hand sanitizer.

What I Didn’t Like

  • Strictly for Essentials: With a depth of about 1.6 inches, this bag is not for over-packers. You won’t be fitting a water bottle or a bulky sunglasses case in here. If you need to carry more than your “survival kit,” you’ll definitely need a second bag.
  • No Room for Overstuffing: Because the silhouette is so rigid and clean, the bag doesn’t “stretch.” If you try to cram too much inside, it can distort the leather or make the zipper difficult to close, so you really have to stick to the basics.
  • A Tad Top-Heavy: Because the phone sits in that front molded pocket, the bag can feel a little front-heavy or “top-heavy” depending on how much you have inside the main compartment. If the bag is mostly empty, the weight of a large phone can make the bag lean forward a bit.
  • Tight Fit for Bulky Cases: While the phone pocket fits most modern phones (like my iPhone 14 Pro Max), it is a very snug fit. If you have a particularly thick or “wallet-style” phone case, you might find it a bit of a struggle to slide it in and out easily. I have the Peak Design Nomad Case and had no problem, but a thicker one would’ve been a bit more snug to pull in and out.

What sizes of phones fit the Miller bag?

The exterior molded pocket measures 7″ x 4″ and fits most modern smartphones, including iPhone Pro Max models. It’s designed for a “phone-first” experience, though very bulky cases might make it a tight squeeze.

Can you swap the strap?

Ally having a smoothie in fabletics athletic dress in light pink and black bandolier crossbody

Yes, the strap is fully removable and can be swapped with any other Bandolier strap. This lets you easily customize the style of your bag by switching to different colors, materials, or even some cute decorative chain options.

The next accessory I’m eyeing up is the Airpod holder that clips on and matches the pebble leather of the bag. It’s so chic, and perfect for travel days or when you’re out on walks.

Is it made of real leather?

The Miller is crafted from 100% genuine top-grain leather, giving it a premium feel and excellent durability. This high-quality material helps the bag maintain its structured shape even with daily use.

I’ve been using mine almost daily for the last month, including for travel, as an everyday carry around the city, and as a walking crossbody and so far, I haven’t noticed any wear at all.
