Horizn Studios SoFo Rolltop Backpack Review: Expert Insight

Last summer, I was asked by Horizn Studios to review their M5 Cabin Luggage, so I was pleasantly surprised when they delivered two boxes to my doorstep.

Inside that second box, you guessed it, their SoFo Rolltop Backpack X, as well as a their little Top Case, that perfectly matches my luggage.

As someone who likes to stay stylish while traveling, you bet I was thrilled because all my luggage is now coordinated.

They also had great timing because I was about to embark on a three and a half month-long trip around Europe and Africa.

So did this little rolltop backpack survive, let alone thrive with so much travel?

When I’m picking a travel backpack, I always think about size, material, comfort, price, and sustainability.

At this point, I’ve got a small collection of travel backpacks, and this is the only brand that included one, making the whole vibe just feel more luxurious.

The medium-size of the SoFo Rolltop Backpack is ideal as an everyday bag carry or as a personal item paired with your carry-on luggage.

Last summer I used this as my personal bag for about 15 flights total across three continents over about three and a half months without any issues.

Thanks to its rolltop design this bag gives you flexible space, making it ideal for squeezing in that last little something you’re dying to pack, or that souvenir you just can’t leave behind.

Before buying, the most important thing to think about is what you’ll carry on a daily basis, or while in transit, as well as staying aware of airline restrictions to determine if the backpack’s dimensions meet your storage needs.

Organization and Storage

Laptop Compartment

Your laptop will stay secure in a dedicated 16″ compartment with zippered access on the side of the bag.

This padded section keeps your device safe and easily reachable without having to open the main compartment.

I always slide my Kindle in as well, and they both fit inside comfortably.

Front Pocket

There’s also an easy-access front pocket for items you need on the go.

It’s perfect for storing your phone, keys, or wallet, ensuring they’re handy when you need them.

I normally kept my lip gloss, wallet, a charger, and keys in mine on trips where I was hiking or biking, and always keep snacks and headphones in there for long-haul trips.

Interior Pocket

Open your bag, and you’ll find an interior pocket that is great for smaller items.

I like to keep any important items here when I’m traveling, since it’s a harder pocket for someone to access compared to the front pocket should anyone try to pickpocket me en-route.

It really helps you stay organized by giving those small miscellaneous items a specific place, so they don’t get lost at the bottom of your bag.

Shoulder Straps

When considering the Horizn Studios SoFo Rolltop Backpack, the shoulder straps are a crucial component of your comfort and the bag’s overall functionality.

These straps are adjustable, allowing you to find the ideal fit for your body size and shape.

They’re also padded, which can help reduce the strain on your shoulders when the bag is full.

Some users have noted that the shoulder straps may feel too short for those with a broader build or taller frame, but I found it fine (I’m 5’8 and as you can see in photos fairly petite).

This is important because if the straps are not the right length, they can sit uncomfortably under your arms or pull on your shoulders, making it less comfortable to carry, especially if you’re only wearing a thin layer like a T-shirt.

The straps that can accommodate different loads, however I will note I’ve noticed that they slip over time, meaning you do occasionally have to re-tighten your backpack straps, especially if you’re carrying heavier stuff.

Either way, when buying any backpack, it’s important to note that the straps can affect how the bag sits against your back, the ease of movement, and overall carrying comfort.

It’s also worth noting that this bag doesn’t have a sternum strap, which honestly is fine for the size of the bag. I really only missed it when I was hiking and had a lot of heavy picnic supplies stuffed in the bag.

Its sleek, minimalist design blends seamlessly with the robust functionality, making it an ideal companion for both urban commutes and weekend getaways.

This backpack’s effortless attachment works easily with every suitcase I’ve used it on (Horizn Studios M5 Cabin Luggage, and the Away Bigger Carry On), ensuring a smooth and hassle-free journey.

In fact, out of all my travel backpacks, this is the only one with a trolley sleeve that’s actually easy to slide on without any hassle. This is a huge reason why I like using it as a personal item.

Performance

The Horizn Studios SoFo X Rolltop Backpack is a perfect personal item for travel, especially for anyone who loves rolltop design, which provides expandable storage to accommodate all your essentials.

I used this backpack as my personal item for almost 4 months of continuous travel across three continents last summer and never had a problem fitting it under the seat.

It also came in super handy as an everyday carry while I was on the road. Even while I’m not traveling, this is my go-to backpack for biking to the beach, or heading to a coffee shop to work.

Overall, I found it to be a really great bag, especially for everyday use.

Though, I will admit, I found myself frustrated a few times, having to pull everything out to reach the bottom, but let’s just the nature of this type of bag.

After using it non-stop for about 4 months, it held up beautifully, minus a bit of dirt it picked up on safari in Namibia (which is honestly my bad, as it’s not meant for safari).

The great news is most of the dirt washes off easily, in my case leaving only a small shadow of a stain forever reminding me of the incredibly dirty and dusty safari vehicle I spent two weeks traveling Namibia in.

I also used it to hike a couple spots around the South of France, and even after hours of wear, the backpack was super comfortable thanks to the padded straps and back.

The only issue I found was that a full load of picnic supplies (wine, glasses, cheese, water bottle etc.) caused the strap closure to slip, needing readjustment during my hike.

Which isn’t an enormous deal, and was never a problem while traveling.

I was also happy to see the material held up great with so much use. I’ve used it a ton as an everyday carry, and besides the corners wearing some, the material is top-notch.

My Overall Thoughts On Horizn Studio’s SoFo Rolltop X

What I Like:

• The plant-based and biodegradable build shows the brand’s commitment to sustainability
• The rolltop closure provides flexible volume
• This backpack has padded shoulder straps, that were comfortable even on long hikes

What I Don’t Like:

• It can be difficult to find things inside the bag if you aren’t overly organized
• No water bottle pocket
• The bottom corners and corners on the top wear over time

The Verdict

With its medium size, the SoFo Rolltop Backpack X serves as a perfect carry on but can also handle the demands of a daily urban adventure.

I’ve used mine non-stop for almost the last eight months, including that three and a months long trip during which it served as a personal item, hiking bag, a day bag while on a safari, beach bag, and even grocery bag at times, and it still for the most part looks like brand new.

Sure, the edges on the bottom are starting to show some wear, which is fair after all the crazy surfaces this bag has been placed on (sand, rocks, you name it across 7+ countries), but the rest of the bag is as perfect as the day I got it.

I’ll admit I was quite anxious about getting all the dirt and dust off it after a week long safari adventure in Namibia, but with a bit of soap and water, I was able to get almost all the marks off.

Price-wise, the SoFo Rolltop X sits at a higher range. However, the cost is justified by the backpack’s features, material quality, and brand reputation.

Plus, the outer pockets keep your essentials within reach, giving you an easy way to keep organized on the go.
