If you’ve ever lived in New York City, you know that the true meaning of “leg day” isn’t found in some overpriced boutique gym, it’s found at the bottom of a subway entrance with a 40-pound suitcase after a long-haul flight, and a “Temporarily Out of Service” elevator sign (if the station even has one).

Between lugging groceries across three avenues and navigating my 5-floor walk-up, I’ve basically been in training for a marathon I never actually signed up for.

Who needs a Equinox when you have to hoist a traditional suitcase up and down the stairs because accessibility is more of a suggestion than a rule in this city?

So, when Bagsmart claimed they had fixed this eternal struggle with a massive 43L roller bag that effortlessly converts into a backpack, I was both intrigued and a little bit skeptical.

I needed to know if it could actually handle the chaos of Manhattan sidewalks and the stairs of a train station without breaking my back (or my spirit) on my way to see family in Florida.

Over these last months, I’ve been putting it through its paces as my go-to content gear bag, a possible city to airport luggage game changer, and even took it for a spin on the Brightline to Miami to see how it handles a real getaway.

Is this the hybrid hero we’ve been waiting for? Keep reading my BAGSMART 43L Roller Backpack Review to see what I found out!

Overview of BAGSMART 43L Roller Backpack

Ally with the Bagsmart 43l Roller Backpack Review

Launched in 2017 by the design team at Guangzhou Tigernu Leather Co., BAGSMART has quickly established itself as a go-to brand for smart, stylish, and highly organized bags.

Their mission is to offer high-quality products that blend functionality with sleek design, all while remaining affordable.

Since its inception, BAGSMART has garnered a solid reputation for creating a range of products, including backpacks, camera bags, travel organizers, and work totes, a few of which I’ve had the pleasure of testing over the last year.

BAGSMART is popular for its clean lines, clever compartments, and durable materials, making its products ideal for everything from daily commutes to weekend getaways.

Over the years, I’ve tried several of their travel backpacks, packing cubes, totes, and suitcases, and I’ve been consistently impressed with the quality and value they offer.

BAGSMART products are popular among students, busy professionals, and frequent travelers who seek smart organization and durability without the hefty price tag.

The brand’s commitment to quality and customer satisfaction is evident in every product they create.

Things to Consider Before Buying the BAGSMART 43L Roller Backpack

ally wearing the Bagsmart 43L Roller Backpack

When you’re looking for a versatile travel backpack, the BAGSMART 43L Roller Backpack is definitely worth taking a peek at.

First off, let’s talk budget. While it’s not the cheapest option out there, the blend of backpack and luggage modes could make it a smart investment, especially if you travel frequently.

Think about your travel habits. Do you need a bag that can smoothly transition from airport terminals to urban streets and even nature trails? This backpack does just that, offering the flexibility to roll or carry it as needed.

Durability is another crucial thing to think about before investing in luggage. BAGSMART is known for its well-built products, and they crafted this one from durable rip-stop fabric designed to withstand the wear and tear of travel.

However, pay attention to the zippers and other components, as their longevity will affect the bag’s overall utility.

And most importantly, what kind of packer are you?

With 43 liters of space, this bag should meet most of your requirements for clothing, tech, and other essentials, but it may not be the most secure bag, depending on the type of travel you plan to do.

Finally, think about the bag’s dimensions and weight. Make sure it’s comfortable for you to carry and complies with airline carry-on restrictions, especially for the airlines you travel most.

All in all, if you’re looking for a travel companion that’s as stylish as it is practical, the BAGSMART 43L Roller Backpack could be just what you need.

Hardware and Design Features

Color and Style

Bagsmart 43L Roller Backpack from behind

The aesthetic of the Blast 43L is clean and utilitarian, making it a great fit for both business trips and casual getaways.

This bag is available in muted, professional tones, like this khaki color, as well as a really pretty burgundy shade that was sold out when I ordered (it looks stunning).

While I love this color, the material has picked up a few marks over time, which wouldn’t be as visible on a darker color.

Carry-On Dimensions

BAGSMART 43L Roller Backpack Review dimensions

At 21.7″ x 13.8″ x 9.1″ (55 x 35 x 23 cm), the creators designed this 43L powerhouse to maximize your packing capacity and ensure it fits airline-approved dimensions for most overhead bins.

It’s the ideal size for those who want to skip the baggage claim on longer trips.

And the best part is that despite its large capacity, the side compression straps allow you to stabilize the load and maintain a compact profile when the bag isn’t fully packed.

While it’s designed to fit most major airlines’ overhead bins, I always recommend verifying your specific carrier’s rules, as some budget airlines can be a bit more restrictive.

Check out my travel sizer series on Instagram, YouTube Shorts, and TikTok, where I test bags in popular airline sizers, including this one. You’ll be able to easily see if it works for your favorite airline, and just how much you can over-pack it!

Materials

BAGSMART 43L Roller Backpack Review ally travels

BAGSMART opted for a high-density rip-stop fabric finished with a PU-like coating, which does a great job of resisting light rain and general abrasion. But it will pick up marks with travel (what bag doesn’t?).

Overall, I’ve found it to be durable, and the coating keeps belongings dry if you find yourself in a light rainstorm.

Spinner Wheels

BAGSMART 43L Roller Backpack Review wheels

Unlike 360° spinners, the Blast 43L uses a smooth two-wheel roller system optimized for airport floors and paved city streets.

These wheels are like what you’d remember for a childhood roller skate and are quiet on tile and asphalt.

The downside with only two wheels is you lose the ability to drag it along beside you, which can sometimes be easier when navigating large cities and busy airports.

While they handle uneven pavement better than cheaper inline wheels, you’ll likely want to switch to backpack mode if you encounter steep staircases or particularly rough cobblestones.

Wheel Cover

bagsmart blast 43l roller backpack Wheel Cover ally travels review

This is easily my favorite and the most thoughtful feature of this bag, and that is the low-profile wheel housing.

When you’re in backpack mode, a dedicated flap covers the wheels to ensure that any dirt or road grime doesn’t transfer onto your clothes or the cabin surfaces.

The design integrates this housing seamlessly into the lower shell, adding almost no extra weight while protecting the wheel axles from impact during transit.

That said, it was a bit more complicated in transit, than in theory, especially if you didn’t have anywhere besides the ground to lay your bag down to convert it.

Zippers

ally travels bagsmart blast 43l roller backpack review

Let’s talk about zippers, because in the world of budget-friendly travel gear, this is usually where things fall apart, literally. We’ve all had that moment of panic when a zipper snags right as you’re trying to rush through security, but I’m happy to report that hasn’t been the case here.

While I don’t see a specific brand name like YKK on them, these zippers glide incredibly smoothly and feel surprisingly sturdy.

One detail I really appreciate is the water-resistant coating on the zippers for the larger compartments. When I’m running around the city shooting content and a light drizzle starts, that extra layer of protection gives me a lot more peace of mind for the gear I have tucked inside.

It’s a thoughtful touch that makes the bag feel much more “pro” than its price tag might suggest. Even when I have the bag packed to its 43L limit, the zippers hold tension well without feeling like they’re about to pop.

Trolley Handle

BAGSMART 43L Roller Backpack Review trolley handle

The telescopic handle on this bag has a two-stage aluminum pull bar that extends smoothly and locks securely into place.

This makes it easy to adjust it between two heights to find the most comfortable stride for your height.

When you’re ready to board or carry the bag, the handle retracts completely flush into the frame, making sure it doesn’t interfere with your packing space or snag on other bags in the overhead bin.

Overall, I found the handle to be pretty standard and comfortable for quick trips.

Organization and Storage

Laptop Compartment

laptop compartment bagsmart blast 43l travel backpack

This laptop sleeve sits in a vertical front-pocket designed to accept up to a 15.6-inch device.

I’ll be honest, I won’t be putting my laptop in this pocket. I don’t feel safe even though it’s a shallow, lightly padded pocket rather than a dedicated, fully-cushioned compartment.

If you are going to use it, you should use a protective sleeve for fragile laptops.

That said, it would be quick access, which helps when you need to remove your laptop at security.

The pocket also lacks deep side padding and doesn’t have a locking zipper, so avoid storing the laptop loose if you expect heavy impacts or rough handling.

In general, I think this pocket works much better as storage for an extra jacket or something minimal and durable.

Water Bottle Holder

bagsmart roller backpack water bottle compartment

Unlike a lot of roller bags, the Blast 43L Wheeled Travel Backpack, has a water bottle pocket.

And the best part is, because it uses a stretchy elastic top and sits on the pack’s side, it fits about 16–21 ounce bottles with no issues.

A 1-liter or larger bottle may even fit when you don’t fully stuff the main compartment, but let’s be honest, most of us are over-pack, trying to be carry-on only legends, so it’s unlikely we’ll have that kind of extra space.

Outer Pockets

interior pockets bagsmart blast 43l roller backpack

This bag has two primary outer pockets: a small top pocket with dual mesh organizers and a vertical-front pocket for the laptop.

The top pocket works well for wallet, phone, boarding pass, and sunglasses, basically items you need fast access to at security or in transit.

A secondary horizontal front compartment provides a soft-lined space meant for your laptop, but in all honestly, I wouldn’t ever put my laptop in that part of the bag for fear of it getting broken.

Instead, slide in a few magazines or a book. Basically, something durable. I slide a book and my pashmina in the front of mine.

Interior Pockets

bagsmart blast 43l travel roller backpack interior pockets

Inside the main clam-shell compartment, you get two zippered mesh pockets: one on the lid and one on the side wall, plus two compression straps on the base.

I always use compression packing cubes to keep clothing compressed and prevent the two fold-out support beams from catching small items during packing.

The BAGSMART Blast Compression Packing Cubes are my all-time favorite. They always help me stay organized while squeezing in at least one extra outfit when packing for the trip.

When you’re packing, the side mesh pockets are ideal for socks, underwear, chargers, or toothbrush.

And the compression straps are fantastic for securing packing cubes or squeezing in that last dress or jacket on top.

Remember, a flatter pack and help you meet carry-on sizer limits.

Backpack Straps

BAGSMART 43L Roller Backpack Review backpack straps

This bag’s backpack straps fold out from a hidden compartment, so you can switch to shoulder carry quickly.

When you’re ready to go from suitcase to backpack mode, you’ll find that the padded, contoured straps sit comfortably for short carries.

While the strap padding is moderate enough for subway runs and stair climbs, it’s not for heavy, long-haul hikes.

If you’re going to be carrying bigger loads frequently, I’d think about a more heavy-duty bag with better straps and a sternum and waist strap.

Sternum Strap

Bagsmart 38L Blast Pro Travel Backpack sternum strap 2

The sternum strap adjusts along a small rail so you can find a comfortable chest position quickly.

You can slide it up or down to match your torso height, which is a nice bonus, since being able to do this helps stabilize the shoulder straps during short carries.

Locking the strap also reduces shoulder roll and keeps the pack from feeling top-heavy when you switch to backpack mode.

How Do I Switch Between Backpack and Roller Modes?

BAGSMART 43L Roller Backpack Review wheels transition to backpack

You can pull out the hidden backpack straps when you need to go hands-free, or tuck them away to use the retractable handle and wheels.

But, my favorite feature, which is a really thoughtful touch, is the built-in wheel cover flap, which protects your clothes from road grime when you’re wearing it on your back.

To switch into backpack mode, release the handle fully and stow the wheels if they protrude.

Then, find the padded shoulder straps; unzip or un-clip their compartment and pull the straps out until they sit comfortably on your shoulders.

Assuming you’re an over-packer like me, use the sternum strap for some extra stability.

If you need quick hand-carrying, use the top or side grab handles. They’re reinforced for short lifts and quick transfers through security or onto overhead bins.

Quick checklist:

  • Extend/retract the telescoping handle for roller mode.
  • Stow or deploy shoulder straps from the strap compartment for backpack mode.
  • Attach and adjust the waist belt for comfort on foot. Use grab handles for brief hand-carrying.
  • Practice the switch at home once or twice before travel to learn each latch and pocket. Familiarity makes transitions in busy terminals faster and less stressful.

Product Warranty

Bagsmart 43l Roller Backpack Review

When you purchase with BAGSMART, you get a manufacturer warranty that generally covers defects in materials and workmanship for a limited period.

It’s important to check the paperwork that comes with your BAGSMART Blast 43L Roller Backpack or the retailer page for the exact length and start date of coverage.

Warranty terms usually exclude normal wear and tear, cosmetic damage, and issues caused by misuse or improper care.

And remember, if damage results from rough handling by an airline, the carrier may be responsible instead.

Either way, head to BAGSMART’s official website to check with them about how they can help you.

Performance

Bagsmart 43L Roller Backpack Review

I’ve been putting the BAGSMART 43L Roller Backpack through its paces over the last three months, and it has quickly become my go-to “content bag.”

When I’m running around shooting, I usually have a mountain of gear to cart around, and having the choice between backpack and roller modes has been a total game-changer.

Depending on the location, whether I’m navigating a tight indoor space or a long outdoor stretch, I can get everything where I need to be quickly and easily.

Travel-wise, I flew with it from NYC to West Palm to see family. I was excited to test it out as both a roller and backpack on a chaotic travel day.

I also took it with me to Miami on the Brightline high-speed train for a quick overnight trip, and fit a ton in here, easily over-packing for a quick night away.

The real “hero moment” for this bag happened when our Uber dropped us off at the wrong location. I had been wearing it as a backpack, but once I realized we had a bit of a trek ahead of us, I quickly tucked the straps away, popped the handle, and wheeled it the last few blocks to the hotel.

That said, I did notice a small “city struggle” during that transition. Especially in a place like Miami or New York, it’s not always easy to find a clean spot to set the bag down to switch modes.

So, unless you want to kneel on the sidewalk, which is tough when you’re already carrying other luggage. So you’ll have to get a bit creative with the swap.

However, I’m so incredibly grateful that someone thought to include the concealed wheel cover. NYC streets (and any sidewalks for that matter) aren’t exactly pristine, and knowing that city grime wasn’t rubbing off on my clothes once I switched back to backpack mode was a huge relief.

The Quick Answer – My Overall Thoughts on the BAGSMART 43L Roller Backpack

BAGSMART Blast Roller Backpack

What I Like

  • The 3-in-1 design offers incredible flexibility for shifting between different locations
  • The integrated wheel cover prevents street grime from staining your clothes in backpack mode
  • Smooth PU wheels and an anti-tip bar ensure quiet movement on any surface
  • Smart features like velvet-lined pockets and RFID protection keep your essentials safe and scratch-free

What I Don’t Like

  • The base weight can feel quite heavy during extended backpack use
  • Transitioning between modes is difficult on busy sidewalks without a clean spot to set the bag down
  • Thin padding in the laptop compartment, that’s really more of a front sleeve, requires an extra sleeve for expensive tech
  • Wheels may not perform well on rough terrain or navigating crowded areas.

The Verdict

Bagsmart 43l Roller Backpack Review 3

If you’re looking for a bag that truly bridges the gap between a rugged gear hauler and a convenient travel suitcase, the BAGSMART 43L Blast Roller is a fantastic choice for budget shoppers.

It performs admirably for airport-to-city journeys, though it can be tough finding a spot to transition the bag on the go.

While the laptop protection is a bit modest (I still recommend a separate sleeve for your high-end tech and placing it inside the bag or in your personal item, like the BAGSMART Blast Backpack which has a lovely laptop section), the sheer organization and flexibility make up for it.

The internal suitcase-style layout is a dream for anyone who uses packing cubes or needs to see all their gear at once. It’s a versatile powerhouse that serves the “modern mover” perfectly if they want something that works on all terrains, and don’t mind sacrificing a bit of weight.

Osprey Sojourn 22″/45L Wheeled Travel Backpack

This is a significant step up in price and ruggedness, giving you a professional-grade suspension system that makes it much more comfortable for long-distance trekking than the BAGSMART.

That said, the BAGSMART is a far more affordable value for urban travelers and offers softer, velvet-lined “lifestyle” pockets that the more utilitarian Osprey lacks.

However, you’ll miss out on the BAGSMART’s specialized travel features like the concealed wheel cover, RFID protection, and the anti-tip stability bar.

MATEIN Rolling Backpack

While the MATEIN is a great daily office bag with plenty of small tech pockets, it doesn’t have theBAGSMART’s massive 43L suitcase-style opening that makes packing clothes so much easier.

I find it to be a bit more “student-styled,” whereas the BAGSMART feels more like a dedicated travel hybrid with more premium interior finishes.

FAQs

Can the BAGSMART 43L Roller Backpack fit as carry-on luggage?

Bagsmart 43L Roller Backpack Review 2

Yes, it meets most standard airline carry-on requirements. However, since every airline has slightly different “sizer” rules, you should always double-checking your specific carrier’s dimensions before you head to the airport.

Keep an eye out on my social media series on Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube Shorts, where I test popular bags, like this one, in different airline sizers to help cut out the stress of travel.

Is the BAGSMART 43L comfortable to wear as a backpack?

Ally Travels Bagsmart 43L Roller Backpack Review

For short bursts, like navigating stairs or a crowded terminal, it’s very comfortable thanks to the wide, padded straps and the included sternum strap.

However, because of the extra weight from the rolling hardware, I absolutely wouldn’t recommend it for long-distance trekking or full days of sightseeing on foot.

Is the BAGSMART 43L suited for long trips?

Bagsmart 43l Roller Backpack Review

With a 43L capacity, this bag is a powerhouse for 5-to-7-day journeys, or weekends away if you’re an over-packer.

It gives you plenty of room for your wardrobe and essentials while maintaining a compact enough form to stay agile in transit.
