I can still remember my first visit to the Monte Carlo Casino back in 2018.
It was my first time in Monaco, and I’d always imagined how glamorous it would be, especially after seeing it in films like James Bond and Ocean’s Twelve.
The great news is it absolutely lived up to the hype, even if I was a bit overdressed (better safe than sorry).
Lucky for you, I’ve learned a lot since that first trip. Since then, I’ve been visiting the Monte Carlo Casino every summer at least once with my dad to have cocktails, usually before or after we’ve eaten at our favorite Italian spot nearby, Il Terrazano.
So get ready to take some notes, because you won’t want to miss any of the tips I’ve got for planning the perfect visit to the Monte Carlo Casino while you’re in Monaco.
Though fair warning, I have no tips on the games, the best I’ve ever done was to win enough money for gelato!

Admission Requirements and Entry Policies
Don’t Forget Your ID

To enter the Casino de Monte-Carlo, you must go through security and then, while buying a ticket, present a valid form of identification.
This can be a passport or a national identity card if you’re an EU national. But it’s very important to note that Americans cannot use driving licenses as a form of ID. I always see a group getting turned away because they didn’t bring their passports.
If you forget, then you won’t be playing the slot machines or having a martini in my favorite spot for people-watching inside the casino.
Admission Fees

Your ticket to the casino comes with a set fee. As of last summer when I went, it’s 20 euros, which grants you access to the casino from 2 PM and includes a distinctive Casino Royal offer.
Essentially, this offer gives visitors a €10 voucher they can use at the slots, the bar, or the Salon Rose restaurant if they spend at least €40 per person at the restaurant.
This really helps offset the initial cost of entry, especially if you aren’t a gambler. It’s also a nice little perk that makes the experience even more enjoyable.
I highly recommend grabbing a martini and settling in for a bit of people watching.
Age Restrictions and Visitor Eligibility

The minimum age required for entry to the gaming rooms in Monaco is 18 plus one day.
It’s worth noting that minors are okay to visit the Atrium or dine at the Salon Rose Restaurant until 2 PM.
And always remember, staff strictly enforce age restrictions for cultural areas and exclusive gaming sections, and they require ID for entry, so whatever you do, DO NOT FORGET YOUR PASSPORT!
What to Wear to the Monte Carlo Casino and Etiquette
Appropriate Attire for Different Areas

When entering the casino, your outfit is just as important as your behavior. I always opt for a chic dress, and nice sandals.
Everyone entering the casino is expected to dress elegantly and behave respectfully, just like you would in most nice places.
That said, what you can get away with wearing also depends on where in the casino you plan to go, and what time you visit.
For example, exclusive gaming rooms at the Monte Carlo Casino demand formal wear. So, if you plan to be in private rooms like the Salons Privés, a tuxedo or evening gown is standard, reflecting the luxurious surroundings.
Main casino floors, while still requiring upscale attire, allow for a slightly relaxed code, so a smart dress or a tailored suit is suitable here.
For the slot machine areas, neat and presentable clothing is expected, although the requirement for formality is less strict, especially in the afternoon.
I typically wear something like in the photo above, as I typically visit in the afternoons, since the trains to Antibes don’t run too late into the evening.
Dress Code Variations by Time of Day

In the daytime, the Monte Carlo Casino’s dress code eases slightly but retains an element of sophistication. Well, at least in theory, because I’ve seen some pretty sloppy tourists’ outfits popping up the last two summers.
You should try to at least wear smart-casual attire, so think tailored pants and collared shirts for men, and chic dresses or stylish separates for women.
As evening approaches, the dress code becomes more formal. I’d opt for a dark suit or cocktail dress that will serve you well for nighttime gambling or events. When in doubt, a black dress and heels is always the move!
Regardless of the time, the casino discourages sportswear and overly casual clothes to maintain its dignified image. Hats are also a no-go inside the casino, so make sure you take them off at the entrance.
I almost always wear a dress and chic flat sandals whenever I visit in the afternoon for a cocktail. But as you can see by my family photos, everyone’s dressed to different levels of fashion, so do what feels authentic to you.
Manners Matter at the Casino

The casino values your privacy and discretion, so don’t think about photographing gaming areas and private rooms. The last time I was having a cocktail at the bar inside the casino, I saw two tourists get escorted out for taking photos where prohibited.
While photos in the entryway and other bar areas are fine, it’s important to respect the rules in designated areas.
Also, this is a big one: you should watch your volume, as the casino prefers a quieter atmosphere to maintain its sophisticated ambiance.
This mostly goes for Americans, who tend to speak a bit louder compared to most Europeans. Every time I sit here with my martini, I end up hearing more than I care to about the cruises and travel plans of fellow Americans, talking at an elevated volume.
When at the tables, follow the games’ rules and betting procedures. I’m not a gambler, but I’m told it’s also considered good etiquette to tip the dealer if you’ve had a successful session.
Exploring the Casino de Monte Carlo
Atrium and Architectural Highlights

The moment you step into the Casino de Monte-Carlo, you are immediately greeted by the resplendent atrium.
This grand entrance sets the stage with its marble floors, onyx columns, and gold embellishments, all reflective of the exquisite Belle Époque architecture. It truly feels like stepping back in time.
Some may recognize the architecture, done by renowned architect Charles Garnier, who also designed the Paris Opéra and Villa Eilenroc in Antibes.
He’s a favorite of mine, as he always infuses his spaces with a harmonious blend of classical and renaissance styles.
And don’t forget to gaze upward to experience the brilliance of the atrium’s skylight, an architectural gesture that bathes the space in natural daylight, elevating the opulent atmosphere.
Publicly Accessible Spaces

The few publicly accessible spaces in the Casino de Monte-Carlo absolutely exude luxury and sophistication. You’ll truly feel like you’re in some sort of fabulous film, especially if you’re surrounded by well-dressed visitors.
While you’re there, you won’t want to miss checking out the gaming rooms, including the iconic Salle Europe, which provides a refined setting for high-stakes games such as roulette and blackjack.
Equally inviting are the lounges adorned with stunning frescoes and sculptures, where you can feel the lively echoes of gamblers and socialites from the past.
While you’re wandering around, you’ll quickly notice these rooms encapsulate the grandeur that has defined Casino Square for decades, making every visit a journey through time.
I truly love coming here every summer, just to soak in all the beauty and history (and always a martini).
The Boutique and Artistic Attractions

While you’re exploring the casino, don’t miss out on the exclusive retailers inside with a curated selection of luxury goods, allowing you to bring a piece of Monte Carlo style back home.
On my first visit it was a heatwave, so I got a really pretty fan that ended up being the best purchase of the whole trip!
And while you’re exploring, don’t miss the casino’s commitment to the arts is evident in the beautifully adorned walls featuring masterful paintings and sculptures, which elevate the cultural experience of your visit considerably.
Each work of art contributes to the storied and sumptuous environment, making this casino a must-see destination for art lovers and luxury seekers alike.

Drinks and Dining
Salon Rose Restaurant Experience

One of my favorite spots within the Casino de Monte-Carlo is the Salon Rose. We had a delicious plate of baccheri with stracciatella when we stopped by.
This intimate restaurant offers a sophisticated dining experience with a cosmopolitan array of dishes.
The refined décor and the menu, which caters to discerning gastronomes, ensure an enchanting meal that perfectly complements the casino’s opulent atmosphere.
Whether you’re indulging in a gourmet dinner or just enjoying a light bite, Salon Rose never disappoints.
Café de la Rotonde and Lounges

The adjacent lounges offer an array of seating options where you can unwind, mingle with fellow patrons, or simply soak in the vibrant casino energy.
Bars and Signature Cocktails

The bars at Monte Carlo Casino are a testament to the establishment’s dedication to top-tier refreshment services. I always love treating myself to an expertly mixed drink from the unique selection of signature cocktails, crafted by skilled mixologists.
I almost always go for a Vesper Martini or a glass of champagne, but their cocktails truly are great. Each bar radiates an exclusive aura, perfect for socializing or enjoying the high spirits that the casino is known for.
Cultural, Architectural, and Historical Significance
Historical Development and Notable Figures

The Foundation of the Casino de Monte-Carlo in 1863 symbolized a turning point for Monaco, driven by the vision of François Blanc and the support of Charles III of Monaco.
As the creator of the “Société des Bains de Mer,” Blanc transformed Monaco into an aristocratic retreat.
The casino became a financial lifeline for the principality, which once faced bankruptcy. Its history is lined with influential figures who foresaw its potential to abolish Monaco’s taxes, securing prosperity for its citizens.
Belle Époque and French Renaissance Design

Stepping into the Casino de Monte-Carlo, you witness a celebration of Belle Époque aesthetics and the French Renaissance.
The Casino was designed by the renowned Charles Garnier, who also designed the famous Opéra in Paris and the Villa Eilenroc in Antibes. He’s one of my favorite architects.
You’ll quickly notice the casino showcases extravagance with its elaborate façade and luxurious interiors, as well as the plush environments and opulent décor encapsulate the essence of the era, making it a pinnacle of architectural excellence.
Cinematic and Pop Culture Legacy

Beyond the lavish gaming halls, the Casino de Monte-Carlo enjoys a legendary status in pop culture. Associated with the thrill of espionage, it has featured in numerous films, including James Bond and Oceans Twelve, solidifying its allure.
The Opéra de Monte-Carlo, housed within, adds to its fame with cultural productions. This entertainment complex does not merely host games; it plays a pivotal role in showcasing Monaco’s dedication to cultural richness and provides a stage where stories of risk and elegance are unfurled.
Car Watching

One of my dad’s favorite things to do is car watch as we go in and out of the casino.
People even line the street to catch a glimpse of the luxury cars cruising by, or you can sit on the terrace of Café de Paris like we do.
It’s a unique spectacle that adds to the casino’s allure, making it a must-visit for automotive aficionados.
