For me, no visit is complete without a stroll through the Jardin Exotique d’Èze. Its panoramic views and unique desert plants never get old, no matter how many times I go.

And I always make time for lunch at Deli, where I can linger over one of their big, fresh salads and finish with a simple but perfect dessert of strawberries and cream.

Explore the Medieval Village of Èze

Stroll the Cobblestone Streets

All walking in Ear circa summer 2021

As you meander through Èze Village’s enchanting lanes, you’ll discover that every corner holds a story, and every viewpoint offers a new perspective on the breathtaking French Riviera.

One of the best ways to experience Èze is simply to wander is to let curiosity guide you through the labyrinth of cobblestone streets, where each turn reveals hidden alleyways, arched doorways, and sun-dappled courtyards.

For the most magical experience, plan your stroll in the early morning or late afternoon, and wear comfortable shoes.

These quieter hours let you soak in the medieval ambiance, linger at cozy cafés, and browse unique boutiques without the crowds that fill the village during peak season.

Trust me, it’s way more charming when you aren’t squeezing past groups of tourists on these smaller paths.

And don’t rush, because some of the most memorable moments come from unplanned detours and quiet pauses to admire the views of the Mediterranean below.

Admire Medieval Architecture

eze village in the south of france

As you weave your way through Èze Village, let yourself be captivated by its stunning medieval architecture, you’ll see a living gallery of stonework and artistry shaped by centuries of history.

Every corner reveals something remarkable, from the sturdy stone homes draped in vibrant bougainvillea to the imposing ancient fortifications that once protected the village from invaders.

Don’t miss seeing the 12th-century Chapel of Sainte-Croix, a true gem tucked away on a quiet street. Its intricate façade and centuries-old charm are deeply woven into Èze’s heritage.

The chapel is typically open to visitors from 9 AM to 6 PM, but hours may vary, so it’s wise to check ahead during your visit.

Try to catch the elegant Église Notre-Dame de l’Assomption as well, with its beautiful baroque interior and sweeping views over the coast.

For the most enchanting experience, plan your architectural wanderings in the early morning or late afternoon, when the golden light bathes the village and crowds thin out.

I still remember my first trip here and how incredible it felt wandering around just as the village was coming alive.

These tranquil hours invite you to slow down, linger in sun-dappled courtyards, and imagine the stories these ancient walls could tell.

Discover Art Galleries and Boutiques

art in eze south of france

One of the best ways to immerse yourself in Èze’s creative soul by exploring its inviting art galleries. Check out one of my favorites, the Where The Magic Happens Art Studio Olga Malinovskaya, where her dance focused artwork steals the show.

As you wander the cobblestone lanes, you should also swing by the renowned Fragonard Parfumeur or Parfumerie Galimard to discover Èze’s legendary perfume-making heritage.

The village is also dotted with artisan boutiques like Victoire for Limoges porcelains.

My favorite time to explore Èze’s galleries and boutiques is first thing in the morning and at a leisurely pace, when you can truly connect with the village’s vibrant artistic energy without the crowds.

Visit Jardin Exotique d’Èze

Enjoy Panoramic and Mediterranean Views

view from top of eze garden south of france summer

No trip to Èze is complete without a stroll through the breathtaking Jardin Exotique d’Èze.

Perched high atop the village on the ruins of a medieval fortress, this extraordinary botanical garden is a true feast for the senses.

You’ll wander along stone pathways lined with rare succulents, cacti, and lush Mediterranean plants, and at 429 meters above sea level, the garden boasts some of the most spectacular panoramic views on the French Riviera.

From its terraced viewpoints, you can gaze out over the glimmering Mediterranean, spot the distant Esterel Mountains, and even catch a glimpse of the Gulf of Saint Tropez on a clear day.

It’s truly one of the most impressive viewpoints that I’ve been to along the French Riviera.

You’ll also see sculptures by Jean-Philippe Richard, which add an artistic touch to the garden’s tranquil ambiance, blending nature and art in a truly magical setting.

For an unforgettable experience, plan your visit at sunrise or sunset.

Both times offer soft golden light that bathes the garden and coastline in a warm glow, making the scenery even more breathtaking, and providing the perfect backdrop for photos, and proposals.

Whether you’re a plant lover, a photographer, or simply seeking a peaceful escape, Jardin Exotique d’Èze is a must-see highlight that captures the essence of this enchanting hilltop village.

Discover Local Flora and Botanical Wonders

jardin de eze in eze village french riviera

The garden’s carefully curated collection features an impressive array of succulents, cacti, and Mediterranean vegetation, each thriving in the sun-drenched climate of the Riviera.

Even my sister, who doesn’t like plants, thought it was interesting when my dad and I brought her last summer.

During your stroll, you’ll notice informative plaques that share fascinating details about the origins and unique characteristics of each plant species.

These thoughtful touches transform your visit into an inspiring blend of education and exploration.

And don’t miss the shaded seating areas tucked throughout the garden. These were a real highlight when I was there last summer.

It’s the perfect spot to relax, soak in the serene atmosphere, and admire the lush botanical wonders that make this hilltop oasis so unforgettable.

Like most spots in Eze, you’ll just want to make sure to go either early morning or late afternoon if you’re visiting during peak season. This way you’ll avoid the influx of tourists, as well as the hottest part of the day.

Hiking and Outdoor Adventures

Chemin de Nietzsche: The Legendary Nietzsche Path

view from above eze

One of the area’s most iconic hikes is the Chemin de Nietzsche, which is a steep, winding trail that connects the hilltop village of Èze with Èze-sur-Mer on the sparkling coastline below. I’ll be honest: I once attempted this hike in the middle of August and only made it about 20 minutes before I had an uneasy encounter with someone on the path. Trusting my gut, I quickly joined another couple heading down and cut my adventure short.

While I’ve always felt safe solo traveling along the French Riviera, this experience was a good reminder to stay aware of your surroundings and always listen to your instincts, no matter how beautiful the trail.

Fun Fact: The path is named after philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, who is said to have found inspiration for his work while walking here. As you make your way along the route, you’ll be rewarded with sweeping views of the Mediterranean at every turn.

  • Length: About 2.1 km (1.3 miles)
  • Difficulty: Moderate to challenging, with a significant elevation change
  • Highlights: Dramatic coastal panoramas, lush greenery, and a palpable sense of history as you follow in Nietzsche’s footsteps

For the best (and safest) experience, set out early in the morning to beat both the crowds and the heat. Bring plenty of water, sun protection, and if you’re hiking solo, consider letting someone know your plans.

Whether you’re climbing up to Èze Village or descending to the sea, the Chemin de Nietzsche is a must-do for anyone seeking adventure, inspiration, and unforgettable views along the French Riviera.

Trails to Èze-sur-Mer

view off the words eze

If you’re craving a bit of adventure beyond the village walls, several scenic hiking trails wind their way from Èze down to the peaceful shores of Èze-sur-Mer.

I haven’t done them, but have heard that along the way, you’ll find a few idyllic picnic spots that are perfect for taking a break, enjoying a snack, and soaking up the views.

And, as you descend through lush greenery, you’ll be treated to sweeping panoramas of the turquoise Mediterranean, each turn revealing a new, breathtaking vantage point.

For a comfortable and safe trek, be sure to wear sneakers or light hiking shoes, as the paths can be rocky in places.

Fragonard Perfume Factory Experience

Guided Tours and Interactive Workshops

Start your time off by joining a guided tour through Fragonard’s historic factory, where you’ll witness the fascinating process behind crafting fine perfumes.

You’ll get to stroll through the laboratory and production rooms, learn about traditional techniques, and see firsthand how natural ingredients are transformed into luxurious scents.

Plus, knowledgeable guides share insider stories and secrets of the trade, making the experience both educational and inspiring.

You can even take your visit to the next level with a hands-on workshop, like the popular “Flower of the Year” olfactory session, where you can blend your own personalized eau de toilette.

This is one I’ve always wanted to take but never had the time to squeeze in, though it would truly be a unique souvenir.

Just think ahead about needing to check your bag if you end up over the liquid allowance for your carry-on luggage.

If you’re captivated by the world of perfume, consider visiting other legendary perfumeries nearby, such as the Galimard Perfume Factory, for even more insight into the region’s fragrant legacy.

The Moyenne Corniche road, which winds between Nice and Monaco, treats you to breathtaking Riviera views along the way, and perfect if you’re driving or catching a taxi. For a budget-friendly option, hop on bus 82 or 112 from Nice, but be sure to check the latest schedules as they can vary throughout the day.

If you’re arriving by train, disembark at Èze-sur-Mer station. From there, you can either take a connecting bus or embrace the challenge of hiking uphill to the village, and a rewarding trek for those with comfortable shoes and a sense of adventure.

I always opt to just hop in an Uber at this point in the game, since I take the train from Antibes. It’s generally not too pricey getting up or back down.

No matter how you choose to travel, the journey to Èze offers its own memorable moments and stunning scenery, setting the stage for your visit to this unforgettable corner of the French Riviera.

The best time to experience Èze is from spring through early fall, when mild weather and blooming landscapes make the village especially inviting.

The Jardin Exotique is usually open from 9 AM to 6 PM, though hours can vary with the season.

Many restaurants and shops adjust their hours based on tourist activity, often staying open later during the lively summer months.

To make the most of your visit, it’s always wise to double-check opening times ahead of your arrival to avoid any surprises.

History and Local Culture: Where the Past Comes Alive

eze village

Èze’s story stretches back thousands of years, with ancient legends suggesting the Phoenicians were the first to settle this dramatic hilltop perch.

Its strategic location between Nice and Monaco made it a coveted stronghold throughout history, especially during the Middle Ages when thick stone walls and winding, narrow streets were built to protect against invaders.

People think that the Egyptian goddess Isis inspired the village’s name.

Over the centuries, Èze has been shaped by a fascinating blend of influences, including Roman, Moorish, and French, all leaving their mark on the village’s architecture, traditions, and spirit.

One of Èze’s cultural highlights is the 18th-century Notre-Dame de l’Assomption Church, a Baroque masterpiece adorned with beautiful frescoes and a striking ship replica suspended from the ceiling, a symbol of protection for sailors that speaks to the village’s deep-rooted maritime connections.

As you stroll Èze’s cobblestone lanes, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time.

It’s amazing to see artisans keeping centuries-old crafts alive in workshops filled with hand-blown glass, ceramics, and the intoxicating scents of local perfumes. Don’t miss the renowned Fragonard Perfume Factory, which offers a fascinating glimpse into the region’s long-standing fragrance heritage.

Vibrant festivals, such as the annual celebration of Saint-Laurent, punctuate local life here, bringing the community together with music, food, and traditions that honor Èze’s spiritual roots.

In Èze, history is woven into everyday life. The village’s quiet charm, breathtaking Mediterranean views, and thriving artistic traditions create an atmosphere where past and present blend seamlessly, inviting you to slow down and savor every moment.

What to Wear When Visiting Èze

Checklist for What to Wear When Visiting Èze

ally and her dad in eze
  • Comfortable Shoes: Sturdy sneakers or supportive walking sandals are essential for navigating cobblestone streets and steep paths.
  • Avoid High Heels: The uneven terrain makes high heels impractical, you’ll be happy when you stick to flats.
  • Light Layers: Bring a lightweight jacket or cardigan for cooler mornings and evenings.
  • Breathable Fabrics: Choose clothes made from cotton, linen, or other airy materials to stay cool.
  • Sun Protection: Pack a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen to shield yourself from the Mediterranean sun.
  • Daypack Essentials: Carry a small bag with a reusable water bottle, portable charger and cable, sunscreen, lip gloss, and any extras you’ll need for a day out.
  • Chic but Practical: For upscale dining, opt for casual yet stylish attire. So think sundresses or smart trousers that transition easily from sightseeing to dinner.

Why This Matters:

eze south of france

Èze’s charming streets are beautiful but can be steep and uneven, so comfortable footwear is a must for safe exploring.

And if you’re visiting in the summer, the Mediterranean climate means you’ll want to dress in breathable fabrics and bring layers for shifting temperatures.

Sun protection is also vital, as the sun can be intense, especially in summer. And a small daypack or tote bag (I use my Longchamp) keeps your hands free for photos and holds any essentials you might need along the way.

And since Èze has its share of elegant restaurants, packing a versatile, stylish outfit ensures you’ll feel both comfortable and chic, whether you’re sightseeing or enjoying a memorable meal overlooking the Riviera.
