Peak Design Mobile Tripod Review: A Solo Traveler’s Dream?

As a full-time solo traveler, I’ve had to get creative over the years to take photos and videos of myself in locations all over the world.

I’ve experimented with several phone tripods, but they’re always too heavy and annoying to carry around on my daily adventures.

I hate to admit I’ve missed out on some pretty cool shots because I didn’t want to deal with toting around my tripod all day.

So, when Peak Design asked me to try out their mobile products, I was particularly excited about the small and stylish mobile tripod they offered to send my way.

Over the last month, I’ve used it everywhere, from the city streets of London to the beaches of the French Riviera.

So it’s safe to say I’ve tested it in tons of different environments.

I’ve also had many people stop and comment on it because they’ve never seen anything so compact before.

They always want to know is if this actually is the ultimate on-the-go tripod?

Peak Design founder Peter Dering took a 4 month trip around the world, that ending with him making a little device that would make traveling with his camera easier.

It wasn’t long before his Kickstarter for his camera clip named Capture took off and became a gigantic success.

These days, Peak Design makes way more than just camera gear.

It’s evident with every product I’ve used and viewed on their website, that Peak Design still takes the same creative approach to problem solving and creating useful travel items that people love.

I also really love that they’re a brand that’s aware of their environmental impact, choosing every material thoughtfully.

Things to Consider Before Buying a Mobile Tripod from Peak Design

Before buying a mobile tripod, you need to figure out your photography needs and preferences.

The Peak Design mobile tripod is compact and light, making it easy to travel with.

This mobile tripod has good vibration absorption for steady and makes it quick to set up shots while traveling solo.

If you’re heading to windy or rugged environments, decide if you want to invest in a heavy duty larger tripod.

The SlimLink connection system attaches your mobile device to the Peak Design mobile tripod, meaning you’ll need to invest in one of their cases.

Don’t forget to consider the tripod’s price. It’s a bit of more of an investment compared to other mobile tripods, especially when you factor in buying the case to go with it.

This tripod’s clever design allows it to pack away neatly.

When it’s compact, it’s a slim square that’s about the size of a stack of cards. You can easily stash in a purse, backpack, or pocket.

Though, if I’m being honest, I just keep it almost permanently attached to my phone.

Peak Design Lifetime Product Warranty

It’s easy to invest in the Peak Design Mobile Tripod, when you know that it’s backed by a lifetime warranty.

You should keep the purchase receipt for proof-of-purchase so that you can access the warranty coverage should issues arise, and register your mobile tripod as soon as you receive it.

When you register your Peak Design product, you’ll need to provide some information to activate the warranty, including the:

• Purchase date
• Place of purchase
• Product serial number

Performance

Full disclosure. After just a month of traveling with this mobile tripod, I’m low key pretty obsessed.

It’s been a game changer, being able to always have it with me while I’m off exploring new places every day.

Though it comes with a carrying case, I pretty much always have it on the back of my phone.

Besides being handy for setting up photos and videos, it also adds a bit of bulk to help me grip my case when I’m shooting freestyle.

I can also shoot footage of myself for reels and YouTube with it in places where my large tripod isn’t allowed, like museums.

My only frustration with it is that occasionally I can’t find a surface high enough or in the right location in order to get the shoot I’m envisioning.

But overall, this is the best compact tripod I’ve come across recently, and would say it’s a must for solo travelers who want to document their adventures.

Zhiyun Smooth: This is the first tripod/selfie stick I traveled with and though it’s handy, especially with the built-in gimbal, it did get get a bit bulky to carry around daily.
