As a total theater addict who’s seen hundreds of Broadway shows, it should come as no surprise that one of my favorite things about going to London is the chance to see a few shows.
In fact, I planned my first solo trip ever to see my very first show on the West End—it was Company in case anyone was wondering.
The trip was a last-minute birthday gift for myself, so by the time I decided which shows I wanted to see, things were pretty picked over.
Thankfully, even though Company was the hottest revival of the season, I was able to score same day tickets through TodayTix.
These days, I try to plan my trips to London with enough notice to get the hottest tickets in town, but still love a spontaneous visit when possible.
And after close to twenty West End shows under my belt, I’ve got all the tips you need score cheap West End tickets.
Now the only thing you need to do is take notes, and figure out is which show to see!
Skip Ahead
The prices for West End theatre tickets in London fluctuate a lot depending on a few factors.
Remember, a higher price doesn’t always equate to a better experience. Sometimes, the more cheap West End tickets can still provide a wonderful visit without straining your wallet.
Factors Affecting Ticket Costs:
Average Pricing Tiers:
When looking for cheap theatre tickets, timing is everything.
Early birds often catch the best deals. Anytime there’s a show I know I can’t miss, I always try to book the second they go on-sale.
However, if you’re flexible and willing to take a risk, last-minute tickets can also be a goldmine for discounts.
Weekdays typically have better prices compared to weekend shows.
To secure the very best seats at a lower cost, consider attending a weekday matinee performance. They typically have the best last-minute availability.
Rush and lottery tickets are my favorite savvy options.
A lot of West End Shows run their lotteries and rushes through TodayTix. I almost always end up using it to get lucky for last-minute deals.
Ticket Type | When to Buy | Potential Savings |
---|---|---|
Advance Tickets | As early as possible | High |
Weekday Matinees | A few weeks ahead | Moderate |
Last Minute Tickets | Same day | Varies, often high |
Lotteries | Typically day of or week of show | Moderate to High |
Rush Tickets | Morning of show | High |
Sign up for newsletters and follow shows on social media to get alerts on flash sales or special promotions, which might include sold out shows.
Remember, the theatre world is unpredictable—shows can go from available to sold out quickly.
Regularly check ticket platforms for updates and cancellations to get a chance at those desirable seats.
Besides offering great prices, TodayTix also offers rushes and lotteries helping you score amazing deals on last minute tickets to some of the hottest shows in town!
When you buy last-minute tickets to a West End show, lots of things need to fall into place to make getting to the theatre a reality.
Here’s a breakdown of potential pitfalls:
Availability: Popular shows often sell out quickly. You may find yourself unable to secure a seat, especially for hit performances.
Pricing: There’s a misconception that last-minute deals are always cheaper. In reality, prices may be higher due to increased demand.
Choice of Seats: Last-minute tickets may only offer limited seating options, which might not provide the best view or experience.
Ticket Validity: Scammers prey on those seeking last-minute deals, leading to the purchase of invalid tickets. It’s vital to buy from reputable sources.
Long Waits: You might spend a significant amount of time waiting at the TKTS booth in Leicester Square, and there is no guarantee you will get a ticket.
Losing the Lottery/Rush: Not everyone can be a winner, so keep positive, but don’t bank on winning.
Be smart about where you purchase your tickets and monitor the potential for sold-out shows or high prices, even when seeking deals at the last moment.
As someone who is always traveling, there have been times I’ve ended up in London with barely any notice.
I’m an absolute theater fanatic, it would be a crime for me to be there without seeing the hottest West End show.
Since they tend to be sold out, or are very expensive at the last minute, these are the strategies you can employ to secure a seat.
First, check for any day seats, which are a few tickets released by the theatre on the day of the performance. You can do this in person at the box office.
For real-time updates on availability, consider using apps like TodayTix, which also provide access to exclusive lotteries and rush tickets.
My main option, however, is the online lotteries and rushes that most shows offer where a select amount of low-cost tickets are available.
Winners are usually notified a few hours before the show and given a brief window to purchase the tickets.
For real-time updates on availability, rushes, and lotteries, download TodayTix, which also provides access to exclusive lotteries and rush tickets.
Besides offering great prices, TodayTix also offers rushes and lotteries helping you score amazing deals on last minute tickets to some of the hottest shows in town!
Also, keep an eye on the official show websites and social media pages.
Occasionally, extra tickets get released as the performance date approaches or on the day of the show. This is especially true during peak seasons or holidays when demand spikes.
You can also find out if the theater is doing a cancellation line, where you can stand there for a few hours hoping the box office gets a last minute cancellation.
I did this for a totall sold out run of Fleabag a few years ago. It took a few tries, and arriving hours early to get to the front, but I finally got in!
Remember, you need to be determined, and always be polite to everyone, especially the box office staff. You never know when someone might be able to help you out.
Day Seats: Queue early at the theatre.
TKTS: Visit the booth or check online for availability.
TodayTix: Use the app for deals, lotteries, and last-minute deals.
Social Media: Follow shows for surprise ticket releases.
Box Office: Queue in a cancellation line.
The TKTS Booth, a fixture in Leicester Square, is your go-to for same-day and advance discounted tickets. Visiting the booth in person gives you access to a variety of shows at reduced prices.
Online platforms like TodayTix offer a convenient alternative to in-person ticket purchases. You can find cheap tickets with a few clicks and often score last-minute deals on popular shows.
Besides offering great prices, TodayTix also offers rushes and lotteries helping you score amazing deals on last minute tickets to some of the hottest shows in town!
For day-of-performance deals, consider day tickets available at the theatre’s box office.
Some shows also offer “rush tickets,” or “lottery tickets” released for n the day of the event, or a few days early, depending on the show.
Most shows run their lotteries and rushes through TodayTix.
Be cautious of third-party sellers who aren’t affiliated with official theatre organizations.
Always verify the legitimacy of the ticket source to protect your personal and financial information.
It’s easy to do a quick Google search in order to find out if other people are saying a website or deal might be okay to use.
For last-minute tickets, I always use TodayTix or go straight to the box office.
Normally, I start my start off with TodayTix because they offer exclusive deals and digital lotteries for performances for lots of West End Shows, giving you plenty of options.
Download their app so you can play the lotteries and rushes.
TKTS is also a popular way to score discounted tickets. However, I normally skip this because you really need to be flexible about which shows you’ll see.
Besides offering great prices, TodayTix also offers rushes and lotteries helping you score amazing deals on last minute tickets to some of the hottest shows in town!
Right now my favorite West End shows running are Cabaret, Sunset Blvd., and Lyoness.
Overall, popular ones with everyone are The Lion King, Hamilton, Frozen, and Guys and Dolls.
As someone who’s seen tons of shows on both the West End and Broadway, I’d honestly say it really depends on the show and seat location
I will say that overall, tickets to the West End are more a bit more affordable when comparing tickets to comparable hit shows I’ve seen lately in London (Sunset Blvd.) and NYC (Merrily We Roll Along).
Well, after all this London theatre talk, I think it’s safe to say I’m about to go on a YouTube deep-dive to watch footage of some of my favorite West End shows.
I hope all my tips help you get into your dream show, no matter what your budget.
Shoot me an email if you need any help choosing which show to check out. I always adore talking theatre!
