This is the first year in 17 years I haven’t been in New York during some part of the holidays, and it’s got me feeling quite nostalgic.

I love the city during Christmas because the city truly sparkles. There’s a sense of magic and hope in the air.

Friends get together to celebrate, spending weekends checking out the lights and bar hopping around holiday parties the entire month of December.

If you’re lucky, there’s also a sense of romance in the air, to distract from that inevitable bit of stress that comes over finding the perfect gift.

Plus, there’s also countless “classic NYC holiday moments”, like seeing the iconic tree all lit up at Rockefeller Center, wandering around, checking out all the Christmas markets, holiday window displays and lights along 5th Avenue.

And, one of my favorite activities, sampling all the delicious bites while shopping at the many holiday markets.

If you’re feeling really adventurous, there’s also ice skating.

Though, I must admit after over a decade of living in New York, I’ve still never been.

The closest I’ve gotten to the ice was this one time was with a date.

He’d asked me to meet him to go skating at Rockefeller Center, and we were so excited to arrive after dinner to no line.

It turns out there was no line because it was closed and getting set up for the tree lighting the next day.

We made the best of it and walked around looking at the setup, when all of sudden that iconic Maria Carey song All I Want for Christmas is You started playing, and guess what?

It wasn’t a recording!

She was inside the ice rink rehearsing for the TV special the next night.

Talk about a classic unexpected “only in New York” moment.

While it’s unlikely, you’ll hear it live, I can guarantee you’ll hear this song while enjoying your NYC Christmas.

So sit back, grab some hot cocoa, and let me help you plan the ultimate holiday trip to the city!

Iconic Festive Locations

Rockefeller Center and the Christmas Tree

Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center in NYC

One of the best parts of Rockefeller Center during the holidays is the towering Christmas tree that’s truly become a New York tradition.

This year, they brought in a 74-foot, 11-ton Norway Spruce from Massachusetts.

Even though the tree is there, it won’t be lit until Wednesday, December 4, at 8PM.

Fair warning, if you want to go for the lighting, go super early. It gets packed quickly, and honestly is more fun to watch on TV.

My friends and I always plan our visit to see the tree as late at night as possible to avoid the massive crowds.

If you really want the full Christmas in NYC experiance, you can also do ice skating in the rink just below the tree, which really will create an iconic core New York memory for you.

Dyker Heights Christmas Lights

Dyker Heights Christmas Lights in NYC

If you’re really into holiday light displays, then you can’t miss the Dyker Heights Christmas Lights.

Residents in this Brooklyn neighborhood attract visitors from all over with their extravagant Christmas light displays and decorations.

Aim to check out between 11th to 13th Avenues (also known as Dyker Heights Blvd) from 83rd to 86th St in Dyker Heights, Brooklyn.

If you’re driving, heads up that traffic and parking tends to be annoying, so arrive early with your expectations set.

If you’re taking the train, just take the D to 79th St. and New Utrecht Ave.

It’s about a fifteen-minute walk from there, so wear comfy shoes, as it is a bit hilly.

You’ll also want to dress warmly, and plan for an hour and a half or so of walking around.

Oh, and it’s good to see them before 9pm when some homes turn them off for the night.

Fifth Avenue and Holiday Windows

One of my favorite holiday traditions in New York is meeting up with friends for happy hour before heading over to Rockefeller to see the tree.

Then we always take a late night stroll up 5th avenue to see all the iconic holiday windows and lights.

I always look forward to seeing the windows at Bergdorf Goodman, Bloomingdales, Saks, and Tiffany’s.

They always have such stunning displays with so many amazing high fashion designs showcased.

Macy’s is also another classic if you take a stroll down to Herald Square.

Winter Villages and Christmas Markets

Union Square Holiday Market

Another one of my favorite holiday traditions in the city is checking out all the holiday villages and pop-ups around the city.

I have a big soft spot for the Winter Village at Bryant Park. I’ve been going there religiously every winter since moving to the city in 2007.

It’s the cutest holiday market with unique gifts, amazing food stalls, including some incredible hot chocolate at Max Brenner, and even ice skating.

Some other popular markets that I love hitting up when in the city are the Union Square Holiday Market and the Columbus Circle Holiday Market.

They both have amazing food stalls that are great to hit up with friends or with a date.

Holiday Themed Bars

Nutcracker Rouge Company XIV Christmas opening night cocktails

For holiday cheer with a twist, pop into a holiday themed bar.

NYC has plenty to pick from. You’ll encounter cheery crowds of holiday lovers, and possibly lines, at most of these spots.

Go ahead, swing by at least one of these spots for seasonal drinks surrounded by tinsel, ornaments, and a spirited atmosphere that only New York can offer.

Cultural Experiences and Entertainment

Radio City Christmas Spectacular and The Rockettes

Radio City NYC at night

Everyone should experience the iconic Radio City Christmas Spectacular, a New York classic that features the high-kicking Rockettes, at least once in their lifetime.

I can still remember how much fun my sisters and I had with my mom when we went on a girls’ trip.

With dazzling choreography and festive scenes, it’s a really fun holiday show for the whole family.

You won’t want to miss the famous Wooden Soldier number, it was my favorite!

Plus, most days there are multiple showtimes available, making it easy to fit into any schedule.

And if you’re like me, and love architecture and history, Radio City Music Hall will mesmerize you.

Everyone always asks about seating, and honestly, most seats in this venue are fantastic.

I’ve sat Orchestra right and Orchestra center, as well as up in the back of the Mezzanine and never had a sight line problem.

If you’re really stressed, check out View From My Seat. It’s a place where people upload the view from seats so you can get a visual of the distance from the stage.

I use it all the time when buying theater tickets for venues I’m not familiar with.

Nutcracker Ballet at Lincoln Center

New YorkCity Ballet winter season

Set to Tchaikovsky’s famous score, and Balanchine’s stunning choreography, The Nutcracker is a timeless New York holiday tradition at Lincoln Center.

I can still remember my first time seeing it the year I moved to the city.

My friend Yael and I bought tickets the day they went on sale to see the show the week before Christmas and were so excited for a girls’ night out.

Trust me, you want to buy these tickets as early as possible, especially if you have a limited budget.

Cut to when we finally got to dress up a month later to attend the ballet.

I can still remember the magic I felt as the show comes to life with enchanting costumes and magnificent sets literally rising from the stage.

It was the first time since moving to the Upper West Side I felt like a true New Yorker.

Since then, I still try to catch The Nutcracker every few years, and always encourage ballet enthusiast friends and visitors to put this at the top of their holiday itinerary.

Trust me, whether it’s your first time or an annual treat, the exquisite performances by the New York City Ballet will fill you with holiday wonder.

Broadway and Christmas Shows

Angels in America in NYC during winter snowstorm

Broadway, my favorite NYC past-time, delivers unforgettable memories any time of the year, but really steps it up during the holidays with special limited engagements.

This year, you and your family can catch Buddy the Elf, in the musical based on the popular holiday film, Elf: The Musical.

Don’t limit yourself to just holiday themed shows. There’s so many amazing performances happening on Broadway right now, and I’m always happy to give out recommendations if you need them (I’ve seen almost all of them).

Just shoot me an email for show advice!

Company XIV’s Nutcracker Rouge

Opening night of Company XIV Nutcracker Rouge

For a bold twist on a holiday classic, Company XIV’s Nutcracker Rouge combines baroque dance, circus arts, and burlesque elements.

I’ve seen a few of their shows now, and they are always impressive and wildly sexy.

This production is a sultry take on The Nutcracker, that will leave your jaw on the floor with the stunning costumes and wild performances.

Arrive early to enjoy cocktails at their delightful bar. Every drink I’ve had has been a winner here.

Please note that this show is for mature audiences and perfect for a sexy date night or fun night out with friends.

I’ve gone with both and friends and dates agree this is the most fun holiday celebration in the city!

Company XIV

After seeing Company XIV's amazing production of Seven Sins, I'm dying to catch their other productions. If it's as sexy as the last one I saw, you're in for one very steamy date night.

Outdoor Activities and Recreation

Ice Skating Rinks

Ice-skating-in-paris

The city has some pretty iconic rinks to choose from, should ice skating be on your itinerary.

It’s important you make your bookings as early as possible for the best availability.

I’ve heard these are the rinks you cannot miss this holiday season.

Holiday Light Shows and Displays

One of my favorite things about the city during the holidays is the tradition I have with my friend Olivia to check out all the holiday lights and windows along 5th Avenue.

We’ve been going for years, and every year the decorations get more epic.

These are spots I never miss swinging by to see during Christmas.

  • Bergdorf Goodman
  • Cartier
  • Louis Vuitton
  • Saks 5th Avenue
  • Bloomingdales
  • Macy’s

Shopping and Souvenirs

I heart NYC Gift shop

No trip to the city would be complete without a bit of shopping, especially during the holidays.

Between the Christmas markets, big department stores, and cute little boutiques and vintage spots, you will find something for everyone on your list.

And worst case scenario, there’s always a stop at one of the classic New York City souvenir shops.

After all, gifting someone an “I Heart New York” t-shirt or NY hat is always a great nod to the iconic city.

Is Christmas in New York Worth It?

christmas tree at 30rock 2

Honestly, I think it depends on how much you love Christmas.

It truly is a once in a lifetime experience for most people, and can be really magical.

But it’s also worth noting the things that get glossed over about the holidays.

  • There’s lots of slow-moving crowds.
  • Prices for accommodation are much higher.
  • The weather can be quite cold, windy, and miserable. Especially once you factor in all the time outdoors, you’ll be spending.

That said, if you can handle those things, it’s worth booking your trip.

If that stuff doesn’t sound appealing to you, I’d wait and visit during an off-peak time of year.
